I was intently looking at some begonias in a nursery yesterday when I got this strange feeling that someone was watching me. l actually looked around then when I looked back at the begonias I saw all these Rudolphs under the bench. They were keeping an eye on me. Hilarious!

I should have bought one and may still go back but the nursery is 2 hours away. The plant appears to be one of the newer Philodendron Xanadu's does anyone know which one?

That is too cute! It looks very similar to a decorated Horsehead Philodendron (Philodendron bipennifolium) that @purpleinnopp Tiffany has and similar to one of mine. You can see a photo of Tiffany's plant disguised as Reindeer in this post: http://garden.org/thread/view_...

Very similar, but the leaves of your pic have extra lobes. IDK what they are, beyond cute!! Calling the store might satisfy curiosity, unless you've talked yourself into needing one by now.

Who me? Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

I almost went back yesterday but the idiot light came on telling the car had a problem so I reluctantly came home. While there is civilization on both ends of the trip there is an hour or so in the middle with about 40 miles of nothing. Didn't want to be stuck out there.

Tiffany, I too saw that it had more lobes than your plant did. It looks like it could be Philodendron squamiferum Philodendron (Philodendron squamiferum)

Good call Debbie, I think you nailed it. FYI, I saw them at Hyam's on James Island.

That's what I figured. I saw them there at Hyam's on a previous visit. I didn't get to stop by there on my last visit to my parents on James Island, a couple of weeks ago. It was a short visit and there was too much to do in that small period of time. I love going there and just looking around at the wide variety of plants in their greenhouse. I hope to get back there in another week or two.

The info I read on this plant says it has hairy red stems. I can't wait to go back and see if those plants have that characteristic. Maybe one day this week.......
Debbie, I could spend days going between Abide a While and Hyams but you have small but very interesting nursery in O'burg that I like. Have not been there is several years but I really like the selection at Depot Nursery.

Alice, I've never visited Abide a While, but I just googled it. It looks like a very interesting place to go. I will have to find some time to go by there on one of my trips to visit family. I had intended to go while I was going to Southeastern Spine Center for treatment, but I'd be too groggy to remember to tell my driver, either DSis or DH to go there. Whistling I no longer go to SSC.

As for Plant Depot, I do enjoy going there from time to time. Although, it seems to me that they do not have as varied a selection as they used to have a few years back. I was still working full time back then, and did not have a lot of time for nor as much interest in gardening as I do now. I'd go there on my lunch break and browse around. Occasionally, I'd buy a plant or two. Big Grin It had a nice relaxing atmosphere. Thumbs up

Well, I went back to the nursery yesterday and learned it is not the P. squamiferum. Dang, I thought we had it.
The person I spoke with did not know which philodendron it was but she said even young squamiferums have red stems. Sooooo, the mystery continues.

This pic that @skylark added to the entry in the DB here looks like newer petioles (I think this is what you are referring to by stem, petiole = the little stem that attaches leaves to the main body of a plant) are red, but looks like they fade to green on older leaves? Not sure that's the correct interpretation of the pic. (Tagged Skylark in case she might have some input, having seen the great specimen in her pic in person.)

yep, i went and checked other pics of the same plant - and older petioles are dull green. you can see them in the pic above too, on the lower stem.
