I would like to know from those of you who have grown these:

Thumb of 2015-12-05/texaskitty111/43c44b

Do they disintegrate after a while, or stay hard as rocks? I have several different ideas for them, but not if they are going to fall apart.

I didn't see any info about their use on that site. I was thinking about cutting off the bottom and stem, drilling a water hole, and using them to grow strawberries. Wouldn't want them to rot after all that work.

TK, I've never grown that particular variety, but they are a hard-shell gourd (Lagenaria) and once cured should be "hard." But, being plant material, I don't know that they would hold up to something like being a planter for strawberries....

LOL -- I can't honestly see what kind of craft one might use them for; maybe try some birdhouse or bottle gourds ??!

Birdhouse would still be outside. Dean made one into a water dipper, just like grandpa used to have.

I think once they are dried out, could take up to a year, you can make bird houses out of them, the outside must be sprayed with a shellac. They are really cool looking Thumbs up

Maybe the caveman gourds would be okay as planters if they were painted or varnished on the inside?

Ugh, more work. Well, maybe if I ever get around to it. Was thinking they would be hard to water too, without washing out the dirt. And, soaker hoses don't work for pots

Hmmm, I asked dean very politely if I could try one out on his head, but he's not cooperating.
