Years back, when we lived in Ohio, I had some beautiful ferns with jack-in-the-pulpits throughout on the north side of our house. Every Spring I would have to dig up the wandering new growth from the runners to move back into their designated area. Our small dog, Kelly, would hide under the ferns to watch the squirrels come down into the yard and then chase them back to the tree. Thanks for jogging my memory with that great tip and the beautiful photo!

Well that answers some questions I had about why some ferns died near the south side of the parsonage!

Good tip, some of my ferns have gone dormant to deal with the scorching heat.

Ask me how I know that about hot foundations and ferns.

I never knew about this since ferns like that hate Phoenix in the summer. We can't keep them alive. But a great tip!

My friend who lives in Chandler AZ called me tonight to tell me she was driving over tumbleweeds.
I had to ask what a tumbleweed was.

I didn't know this either but our ferns only grow in the deep shade of our woods.

Humph....I have some kind of climbing fern that loves the side of the house...keep trying to pull it out, but it refuses to leave.

Must be the shaded north side, maybe even a little swampy??
Teasing you, Gin, some kinds will do that if the conditions are just right.
Just look out for alligators hiding in the fern fronds.

more like snakes!! Bill was doing something the other day in that area and saw a snake watching him just as he got done...good thing too or we'd be plugging the hole if you get my drift

I also had never thought about not growing them along the foundation. Good to know.

What's that you say - only Dahlias? don't think so, m'girl - remember, I've been to your place.... not for years, therefore can't recall if you have ferns, but I Know you have other flowers/plants. btw - how's your garden renovation going? Susan here I recommend that you grow ferns against the side of the house cuz some varieties need the extra heat

I know this is an old article, but I just planted some ferns...right next to a concrete curb! Well, it is pretty shady there, so maybe they won't overheat.

They'll probably be just fine, Seedfork, as long as the curb stays cool in the shade. Sounds pretty too.
