Enjoyed that immensely, I had been meaning to ask what was a 'bud builder'. However 'scape builder' was raised here but not explained.

Hi Glen, isn't this a great thread? Green Grin! Unfortunately I never found the meaning of ''Scape Builder''. I did look in the AHS dictionary and nothing is listed but still some good reading. So it remains a mystery..LOL.

I am assuming bud builder and scape builder is one in the same. They are all on a scape.

Crimson Pirate is a strong bud builder for me. Maybe the size of the clump or the zone matters? I do water mine quite a lot and we have cool mornings. They are also planted in good soil. Maybe the smaller fans do not perform that way until the clumps are larger. My CP was huge! I have never heard of a scape builder. Some dl send up a second or even third round of scapes after the first set has finished, but I always referred to that as rebloom.

I have two bud building plants according to the article Susan published earlier in this thread. I had previously thought it was just the normal plant habit of both these plants. Now that I understand what bud building is and the spiral look of the scapes, I can safely safely say that for me at least one of these plants is a fabulous bud builder.

'Happy Returns' (Apps) is a very healthy clump that just keep adding one or two scapes after the first bloom. It is always the first plant to bloom prolifically in my garden in late June/July, and reblooms again in late August thru September when the temps slide into the 60's, and cold morning openings are the norm, while the rest of my garden is winding down for the year. 'Happy Returns' is a very bright, cheerful daylily, and a great example of ' daylily bud builders'. Here is picture of my clump 2013.

Happy Returns - June 2013

The 2nd plant mentioned in Susan's article listed as a bud builder is daylily 'ESP' - John Shooter. I was really surprised to see this one on the list. Last year (2012) was its first year to bloom for me. It is not clump size yet. This year 'ESP' sent up 4 scapes. It's a late bloomer for me . I noted it's first bloom Aug. 1, 2013, and remember that it's last bloom was in mid September, another CMO. While this plant seemed to have above average amount of blooms on it, I don't recall anything more specific about it. It will certainly be in my line of sight next Summer as a 'bud building' plant.

Here are a few pix of 'ESP'

You are welcome! I am glad that you all have enjoyed it as much as I did. I do have a few budbuilders but I have not noticed any bud-building yet....I love Happy Returns and what is ESP?

Thank-you Mike for including that blurb on ESP from Marietta Gardens. I love John's white dips, and have 4 of his 'whites' in my garden. Mike, 'great minds must think alike', because I also have 'Goin Banannas' in the garden, and love that one too! Hurray! Whistling

I think Galaxy Explosion and Coral Crab both did here this year. But only on a single scape each and in each case only about 4 buds. It looked funny for a bit because the scape was finished blooming except for tiny little buds growing at the end. At least I think that was bud building.

Stan - That is quite interesting looking! Almost like some cluster blooms that open up starting from bottom to top! Neat!

I have come to the conclusion here that a "good" bud builder is a scape that not only has lots of buds, but many branches, too, so that the blooms don't get hung up on each other as they bloom and wilt. I think yours would be a scape with lots of buds, not necessarily a bud builder - if you know what I mean.
