I saw a strange thumbnail in the post above. I THINK that the first time I saw it, it didn't have all that white space, or I would have noticed it. But it was the sixth image in a post, so I MIGHT not have noticed it on the first pass. (The first five thumbnails look normal.)

Is that thumbnail "wrong"? Or are you experimenting with thumbnail compression and centering?

The thumbnail is correct. It takes the dead center of the image to form the thumbnail and in this case the person uploaded two images in one and the center of that is the text you see in the thumbnail.

I mis-spoke when I said they combined two images into one.

The problem here is actually that the image itself has a huge amount of white space attached to it, which you'll see if you open the image up full size.

Yup - the thumbnail faithfully reflects the white space in the image.

I think we're seeing the whole scanner bed cover in that image.
