Time to mix the ammonia and water. I've got half the garden done - put 3 two quart bottles of ammonia in a garbage pail with six buckets (10 quarts each) of water. Then I could dip out a pail full at a time and douse the plants. Need to get a couple more bottles of ammonia.

Ok, thanks! I need one more quart of ammonia. I poured out 4 or 5 gallons a few weeks back but didn't have enough ammonia to make it as strong as it should have been. *Blush*

I missed this post and I posted about the coffee that worked great for me.

I had a serious problem. The coffee is used in the spring when we have our biggest rain period just as the hostas are waking up. Then I put another coffee treatment after they are up. I do not have one bite.

This if fresh coffee not used coffee as said the caffeine is gone and not affective if you use Starbucks used grinds.

I do not drink coffee it is free for me from the hotel when I travel so it is a good method for me. Someone that drink coffee and buy it for their morning fix it might not be a good idea but it has been very effective for me.

I think the Ammonia is to dissolve the eggs that the slugs lay. I do not know if it kills any big ones! Confused

The ammonia does both. Also contributes a slight bit of nitrogen to the garden.

I usually do it once a year - early, but occasionally do it again later in the season, sometimes using 1:20 instead of 1:10. I also keep a spray bottle with soap and ammonia in the water mix for nighttime raids on the garden. Takes care of slugs AND earwigs, both of which I've seen munching.

Thanks Ann, I'm slowly getting the hang of Hosta maintenance in large part due to posts here. This Autumn/Spring I made sure there was no mulch in areas with Hosta and then drenched with the ammonia solution as the sprouts were pushing up. To date only one plant shows any sign of damage and that slight. These very simple steps have gone a long way here and I'm thankful for the suggestions in this forum.

Ammonia:water - 1:10 or later in the season if you will get it on the leaves, maybe even 1:20

Soap - dishwashing liquid:water 1:40

I've been noticing holes in my Prairie Sun Rudbeckias and saw a slug there this morning and killed him with the trowel but this afternoon I went looking for Sluggo in the box at HD but didn't find it but Ortho is putting out similar product for slugs, snails and insects and it is in plastic jug like a lot of your gradening products are coming in. That makes it easy to store..and you can always keep the lid on and nothing will spill out if turned over, like Sluggo could in the box. I sprinkled it all around the Prairie Sun Ruds and my newly planted daylily today. The neighbor of my friend from church sent me a red daylily but he doesn't know the name of the variety and I was able to make 5 plants out of it.

I need to remember to sprinkle the granules around the double-gold gloriosa daisy(Ruds?) as it is chewed up worst than the Prairie Sun. Will check tomorrow morning and see if I see any dead slugs.
