My heritage includes communal gardening. All my ancestors of record gardened of necessity, raising fruits and veggies for the common good. Once in this country (from 1843 on), they continued communal life. Not only did they raise food on a large scale for the whole commune, they also gardened at home. There were no lawns, only gardens surrounding all the houses. Shade trees and vines other than grapes were considered frivilous. My wife and I still grow vegetable varieties brought from Germany in the 1840s. We've established a seed bank to keep these wonderful varieties from vanishing.
