Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Spiny Sea Urchin')

Spiney Sea Urchin took a while to adapt to my garden. Now it blooms great. The bloom is low in the foliage, but the color is beautiful. Love the look . We used to be Scuba divers so I have several ocean Daylily reminders.

This plant really struggles in my zone. I obtained it in 2010 as a single fan and it took 3 years to get 3 fans of it. I decided to send it south. Well, much to my surprise, I guess I didn't get all of it when I dug it out and it came back. I only have one fan and it is very small but I decided to give it another try. Hopefully it will bloom next year because I would like to use its pollen again since I did get one very nice toothy seedling from it.

I got Spiny Sea Urchin earlier this year along with other plants. It has not done as well as some of the others. It seems to be struggling to adapt. If it doesn't come around next spring, it will have to find a new home.......

Someone was very generous and sent me a couple of fans a few years back. I loved it but after 2 years of struggling it finally vanished from my garden. I have been tempted to try it again but think it probably would have the same results.

Struggles here in zone 4, would not try to grow in our cold zone.

I agree with Betty. The plant grows well, but a toothy flower seems very dependent on hot weather.

I received Spiny Sea Urchin a couple of years ago from an ebay order. It did not bloom the first year. This year it bloomed and I loved it. The bloom was low in the foliage and mine did not reach the hybridizer's listed height, but maybe next year. I got at least 15 blooms and loved every one of them. I started out with 2 fans and it has increased to 4. I like it so much that I'm considering adding a few more fans this spring. This is what looked like in my garden...

Acquired 3 fans of Spiny Sea Urchin in August 2015 that I potted up. I later transplanted into a new raised bed in October 2015.

It bloomed for me this year (July 22, 2016). It produce a scape from each fan. Unfortunately, the scapes each produced a whimpy 2 buds each. The fans are small and tend to be prone to thrip damage and some rust damage. The blooms were small on short scapes. I would like to think that the stats will improve with time?

And this is the whimpy fans. I am surprised it even produced scapes much less 2 blooms each. Geez!


It is now Fall 2016 and the fans still look teeny and whimpy. BUT .... and this makes me laugh .... it now has increased to 3 small, pathetic fans!

But I do love the blooms despite it's poor foliage growth. Maybe it will have the last laugh and eventually turn into a vigorous clump with great foliage that is loaded with blooms?!!!
