Team Label, or Not?

Today's "Team" article addresses plant labels. We've seen gardens full of labels, and gardens with not one in sight. Which team do you fall into?

Few things do I remember perfectly but plants are one. I never label but do buy garden stakes for writing fun words on. (go figure that one!)

If I ever got into a major garden where I was showing it to the public, I would be a label-er but for now, purslane is purslane and spider plants are green or variegated. Maybe I like the surprises that come up too.

Plants use to have a label but not one in sight after a few years. Does it bother me? Nope.

I am in the no label team because it forces me to learn the plant names.
I also do not like the look of obvious tags and labels in a garden.
Somehow it detracts from the natural look which I like in a garden.

This is true, Caroline, and one of the reasons why I resisted for so many years.

I have comforted myself by spray painting my metal tags a nice green color (as seen in the photo), and they blend in fairly well. If there is a white tag in my garden, you know that it is a new plant that I haven't gotten to yet.

No Label Team here. I think I could become a serial label-er if I miraculously found the perfect materials and markers. That hasn't happened. I tend to remember the names of plants I have, look up the names of new plants given by friends, learn their requirements and forget the names. Growing requirements do stick with me.

I can name just about every member of Congress by their mug shot.

weeds, re, Naming members of Congress:
Might have to create a thread for that at Cubits.org. I don't think that project would be pertinent at ATP... not garden related. But I'd be happy to do it at my Cubit / Energy & Power!

OK! Go for it. Even though some of them are basically plants needing fertilization,

Yes I agree
I'm on a severe water conservation program so only the best will be watered. I'm organic so fertilizing will be based on the refuse garbage in this household. I distribute my homemade compost to only the most deserving... So very few established members will get the good, rich, compost.

I'd have to say Team No Label. I do try to remember to label, it just doesn't happen. One of my sisters claims I just like being surprised when a new plant comes up or blooms and I don't remember what it is.

I do know which fruit trees I planted, and what most of the shrubs are even if I don't know the cultivator name.

No label. I like the idea of them...particularly when I'm rummaging through my box of "what's in the garden, notes and tags". But...sigh...I never get around to doing it. I really don't have that much out there so I suppose tags really are not needed.

Team No Label - I know that some label markers would wear off (like the Permanent Markers - NOT perm in a garden) and therefore I don't see the point. Would rather enjoy my garden than get all "het up" about it. Removing weeds is time consuming enough Rolling on the floor laughing

I prefer the half-wild and natural look here, so Team No Label for me.

Nature has the tendency to restore order in the destruction of long-term labels anyway. I find it easier and more visually appealing to keep track of my plants through records and the labeling of photos I've taken of my gardens. Each new plant gets at least one closeup, and one that shows its position in the garden. Its placement relative to those around it make it easy enough for me to recall where each plant or group of plants actually is. If a plant fails to make an appearance for its photos, it's simply irrelevant to me. I could track *no shows* through records, should it ever become necessary to do so. Smiling

The Lists Feature here at ATP will definitely speed things up now, too! Once a plant is entered, it's oh-so easy to access its information! Hurray!

Chelle, you mean there is aplace to do that here... Blinking ...I did buy a label maker...Fruitofthevine sent me plants with markers and they were those printed ones on white plastic tape, then she taped over them with I think packing tape...I still have those...wow

I like to mark newbies in the garden with markers untill I remember what it is...then I dont mind losing them..altho I do keep That ziploc bag full of original markers...

soo Im gonna try to Make some New markers... Rolling on the floor laughing

anyone try Grease Pencils for writing ... It dosent fade in the sun on mini blind material

I help with a plant sale fund raiser soo I try to use Fade less markers...I have not found a UV resistant Sharpie..Ive heard there are such things ???
