I found an image of Euonymus and another of Sorghum - no variety so I tried to "associate" them and the option for the generic entry was not available on the list shown. Am I missing something? Thank You!

no...the generic entry does not come up in this type of search. I will usually just open another window and look up the number that way. Perhaps @dave could come up with a way to code that search to include the generic entries in the results?

I'd be okay with the workaround. Can you please point the way for me to do that? I don't know which number and have no clue where to find it. Thanks a bunch. Thank You!

I have a second window open and when I need a number for a generic entry I type the name or common name in there and search. Most generic name's numbers can be used as such or to further search to find specific cultivars.
Copy and paste the number and return to the first or working window.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

@greene

Spindle (Euonymus) (id#: 660610)

As for Sorghum, it does not appear we currently have a generic entry for this genus.

Just checked the generic Euonymus page and do not see the number 660610 on the page. Please, where are you finding this number? Thank You!

When that happens I tender a Name a new plant form with just the
Accepted botanical name (Genus species) line filled in; once approved the search/or number therefrom can be used.

I was gonna say there is no number in the left hand column but I realized you must mean in the blue area. That is where I keep links using the custom menu bar and...since I had too many links the lowest part of the blue area was not visible to my eye. Solution: I removed about half of my links and now can see this:
Thumb of 2015-12-16/greene/4a0dd7

I'm not sure why there is duplicate information appearing both on the white part of the screen and on the blue part of the screen. Confused
I guess it has something to do with that information app box? Shrug!

Anyway, I finally learned how to find the number for a plant, so thank you very much! Hurray! I tip my hat to you. Thank You!

It's working just fine now. I was able to "associate" the plants correctly and have requested generic for two others.
Thanks for the help @jmorth and @robertduval14 Thumbs up Thank You!

info in 2 areas?

I think you're right on when you noted Information app box.

I think it's there to add to user's conveyance being near the top of the page (should the user target that top area he can assign work to the plant contained on that page from there). If there is a huge amount of entries and fill the page there can develop a long blank space in the left column and if you wish to assign a function to something on that page, you'd have to scroll up to make the assignment; if the user is working on the bottom of a long page he can easily make work assignments from the bottom.

I really have no idea why it is, but were I to forward a postulation I'd answer it as above, at least until further enlightenment shines my way.

You can also find the number for a plant in the URL address so in your screenshot @greene, you can see that number:
