I keep thinking I should go to a feed store or "co-op" and buy some bulk cover crop grain. Or pay 5-10 times as much at a health food store, but at least they won't expect me to buy 50 pounds.

Paying Baker Creek $4 for one ounce of hull-less oats might have been crazy, but it was the cheapest seed I've bought from them ever.

I think that oats, rye, barley and hard red wheat can all be used as cat grass. I have plenty of red wheat berries from Fred Meyer. I have some barley from a supermarket, but have not yet tried to sprout it.

My cat keeps rejecting cat grass, but I keep trying different grains. He'll chew on grass or even weeds outdoors, but if I give him something, he turns up his nose in disdain.

...do you really? I would love the watermelon radish if you have some you could add to the swap! I was about to buy some watermelon radish seeds from a seed catalog...

Welcome, @Amy54501 ! Welcome!

I wish I had some for you, but I don't. That sounds like an interesting veggie, though!

Are you thinking of joining the seed swap? You're welcome to still do so if you'd like, we still have a little over half the trading time to go, so there's still plenty you could call dibs on. Smiling (If not, no worries.)

If I come across someone with cucamelon seeds, though, I'll try to steer them your way.

Now we find out how up-to-date my paper records for my seed stash are!

I'll go look for my watermelon radishes.

P.S.

I just finished my dibbs-ing for the day. I feel like I should light a cigarette and ask the other swap members "Was it good for you, too?"

If it's too much trouble, don't worry about it! Smiling If they happen to jump out at you, though, I'd love some. My husband loves eating radishes, I love growing them (they're so easy and rewarding!), and the watermelon radishes look like they would be beautiful cut into slices in a salad.

No problem! The Radish envelope doesn't have very many varieties in it, so it will be easy to say "yes" or "no".

My favorite radish is Minowase Daikon, even though mine were much too hot for me to eat, because they make lots of seed pods and then plow my clay for me:

I'm pretty sure I have them listed let me check...

@DogsNDaylilies - The watermelon radish is Oriental Radish (Raphanus sativus 'Mantanghong') I have two packs listed in case the others couldn't find theirs.

...a little off-subject, but last week we downloaded all the hobbit movies with the extended edition and, over the period of two or the days, we watched all the hobbit movies the behind-the scenes stuff.

...good to know about the radish. We have very compacted, clay-like soil, so most of my planting is limited to the 4x4 gardening needs I have. ..which isn't much space. It's always nice to hear about things that can grow at all in clay soil, but even better to fond something useful in breaking it up! I'm not sites how I feel about having a yard full of too-spicy-to-eat radishes. Maybe I could try it with small patches at a time. Rolling my eyes.

If you roast radishes in the oven they lose their spiciness. End up tasting like potatoes.

Good info! That's worth a try for me. Do you know if they retain their color, typically?

An old coworker told me this & I just tried it for Christmas dinner. I roasted potatoes, radishes, carrots & onions while the bird was in the oven. They keep their color but become very bland. Texture is like potatoes too. Honestly, no one could tell the difference. I may actually start growing radishes now.

Thanks for the "roasted radish" tip!

If you plant them at the wrong time, they make hardly any roots, but instead lots of seed pods. That was how I got some reseeding going. Once they reseed, they "know" when to germinate so as to make roots instead of pods.

When I complained online about my wrong planting time, someone told me that the pods are edible. They are - and tasty! Just a little heat but a very nice flavor and crunchy texture.

I found my packet, and added it to the swap list. But those seeds are from 2011. Still, a teaspoon of large seeds should give you enough germination to get a row. Think of the old seeds as "self-thinning".
