I could not find the pod bag , so I jumped out the Kitchen door and grabbed a few pods , The plant has the long winter interest pod , with lots of little round pods , that have five or six tiny tiny seeds in them ,,
A bit of chaff , but full of seeds ,, I can barely see the seeds anymore , small or smaller than Petunia ,,
Tiny pods and seeds to you mostly

I don't have them so I think groundhogs are the cutest things! My friend who had them living under her house sure doesn't think so!

Sure beats the skunks we have invading from the North! And they do a lot of damage to the garden digging for grubs & worms. Unfortunately my backyard has a ton of worms so they are forever digging everything I transplant up!

I guess I don't know how this swap works. So far, all I have is 20 packets of mixed annual & perennial seed. Where do I send them? Do I send to the host?

Good question. You'll wait until the end of the swap to see how many of your seed packets are requested and you'll only send those in. You'll receive an automated checklist at the end of the swap that will confirm what seed packs you need to send in along with the address to send them to. Smiling

@KarenHolt , I will have a few of those listed. I don't know if I have pepperoncini already listed, but I can probably include a pack of those. I have basil, tomato, lavender, Johnny jump ups, and cantaloupe, though, and I'm sure I've seen a few others on your list offered by other people. (I have wine and roses weigela bushes, but I don't have seeds for them yet and I don't think they come true from seed. Sad )

Hi Karen. Welcome to ATP! @KarenHolt

I have a Black Pearl cherry tomato, but no Black Pearl Pepper, (mentioned in the concise WWW thread). Only one packet, but I listed it. Nice wish-list!

How old seeds would you be interested in, for salvias? I have some, but scanning the list, I see mostly dates from 2010 to 2012, so 4-6 years old. I wouldn't normally trade them, they're so old.

I've been told to plant salvia seeds "the same year", but have had reasonably good luck up to three years old.

(I haven't tried them lately, and I always pre-soak them overnight in weak hydrogen peroxide first. They swell up and look like frogs' eggs, then germinate more rapidly).

Thank you for the welcome! The black pearl pepper is an ornamental pepper. That is truly the one I want. As far as the Salvia, I usually don't mind older seed but I do worry about the germination rate. If anyone else has tried older seed (4-6 years) for salvia and it's worked please let me know. I intend to winter sow them. I'm really on the fence on this one. If others seem to feel that it shouldn't be a problem, I have no problem with the age of the seed. In the meantime, I'll do some digging myself and see what I can find on the matter.

Dnd - I will be tickled pink with what you are offering. I prefer seed that will come true. If you don't have the pepperoncini it's ok. This list I made has substitutes in the event I can't get my personal "gotta have right now" things. I drive my hubby crazy because I try to look ahead but after the monsoons we had this year, it turns out my looking ahead sometimes saves the garden.

Karen, if I were you, I wouldn't tie up multiple WS jugs with salvia seed 4-6 years old. They are said to be short-lived seeds. If it were just "direct-sow", or even "germinate on a coffee filter", maybe.

Veggie seeds or annual flowers not known for their sort-lived seeds, those I would try.

When I get around to another attempt at a Salvia bed, I'll try a germination test / stratification / test on some where the pkt is not tiny, Deno-style on coffee filters in the fridge. (And of course plant anything that germinates). Like, in a few years when I retire! Then I'll have some solid data points to report about salvia seed lifetime.

P.S. One advantage to older seeds that might have needed stratification when young, is that some species seem to lose some or all their dormancy after years in cool dry storage. In those cases, young seeds might have slow and irregular germination due to dormancy, but older seeds might have slow and irregular germination due to age.

Six of one, square root of 36 of the other.

Jimard, I probably should amend my list to state "any" on the plants I want without anything specific written beside it. I do like surprises. As long as I know what type of plant it is, I can use it. My gardens are mainly reds, pinks, and blues/purples. But I do use orange and yellow as accents in some of them. I learned awhile back that sometimes when I try those "surprises" I actually end up loving what was sent.

Rick, I think with what I have read so far and what you are telling me, I would prefer the salvia not to be older than 2 years. I actually have a tough time with salvia here which is probably why I keep at it. If I can save an oil soaked hosta with dawn dishwashing liquid, I should be able to grow salvia. But this year I planted a ton and only 3 made it to germination then on to full size plants. That was the weather. Someone once told me if you don't like the weather in OK, give it 5 mins. It'll change. They were correct, lol.

Just making sure , I thought that is what that meant ,
Surprises .. Myself also as long as they grow , more fun that way ?
A few added early makes for less hectic to happen and more time to add a few similar that might be enjoyed .
Many do not seed true ,, like Phlox , your pinkish Phlox for instance , White, Blue , most of the time they seed pink or magenta , so tall phlox or short on the label , That is of course garden seeds .
I do not have them listed , But last years Lady in Red Salvia , I have a grocery bag full of them in the Garage , Will you take 2x2 baggie full of pods ,, etc You clean if you want seeds only ?
