well, I would be looking at over $50 without whatever the VAT is...and trust me, that's a chunk of change for me. I keep myself under control by not looking in the nurseries...and that's easy to do here because we don't have a lot of nurseries and they have ZIP in the wintertime...so I feel like I'm safe, then Julia comes along and waves this under our noses.....

Yeah. Got cha. One thing I always have to say to myself when ordering seeds.

"Self ... do you REALLY need 140 of this Echinacia? Or 200 of that Basil? And really - isn't 120 of that Coreopsis a bit much?"
"Anh Ahem...your cart total is now 37 ,,, not even adding in shipping. (Which these days can be absurd! Parks will charge you nearly 9 $ on a 20 $ seed order.)

Which is one reason I like some of the places that have 1 $ packs. I save money on seed I do NOT need. And instrad of one species for 3 $ a pack, I can try 3 species (a great way to rationalize spending the same $3. Green Grin! )

Sorry - getting WAYYYY OT.

I have no idea what a VAT is. But we ordered somewhere around 26 packs of seeds and shipping was about $13. Her prices are way cheaper than anything I've found in the US and the selection was great. I think all in all it was quite a deal! And I feel like I've made a new friend too!

Both I guess, If I buy seeds the added value to me would be the plants grown. But if I buy plants the the added value would be the seeds grown? Well, I guess that way you get taxed coming and going!

An order of mine:

Subtotal $28.34
Shipping & Handling $12.33
Tax $5.73
Grand Total $40.67

"Well, I guess that way you get taxed coming and going!"

Right. That is the purpose of a VAT. It was invented in socialist countries about 40 years ago. It was thought that if you just used a Sales Tax, everyone below the final seller was escaping paying any of a tax. Since in socialism they would not want that to happen, they invented the concept of value added.

A simple example cause to carry the concept thru all transactions it gets very, very complicated.

Assume a VAT rate of 10 %. A wholesaler of seeds sells a pack of seeds to Seedaholic for 2 $. She pays a VAT on 2 $ of 20 cents. She sells the seeds to someone for 3 $. Her "value added" is $1. Her VAT amount is 10 cents. Buried in the overall transaction is 30 cents of VAT. Now the end result would be the same with a Sales Tax with a rate of 10 %. But that would be levied only on Seedaholic - not anyone back in the chain. Not fair at all under socialism. Big Grin

Many VATs were proposed to replace Sales taxes and/or Income taxes. As it turned out, many countries retained them. There are now countries that have all 3. And that is why many argue against replacing the US income tax with a flat national sales tax. Many including ME know that in the end we would have both.

In Canada they use a form of VAT called a Goods & Services Tax. When I worked in Canada as a consultant, it took me 3 times as long to file my Canadian G & S tax forms than it did my US Corporate Income Tax forms. It was a freaking nightmare as I was paying (among many, many other taxes) City of Edmonton Alberta G & S tax, Alberta G & S tax, Canada national G & S Tax.

I can still clearly remember how surprised I was one day, at the age of 18, to learn something I hadn't known before. Truly, I don't say this facetiously, I really did think I knew everything.

Should I say the word 'seeds' in here so we aren't tossed into the sandbox?

Well, I cut down my list of wants from Seedaholic a bit...then I thought I could maybe cut it down more by not getting the ones that are not deer resistant....that didn't work, all the ones I want are deer resistant......
