I have may bulbs that have been with me since 1950. Tiger lilies, iris are the ones I need to make our final move.
We live in SC and need to know the process of transplanting to make them survive. Soil is very sandy there
And weather a lot hotter. Any advise would be helpful.

Bulbs in general travel well. Dig them up as late in your packing process as possible, try to keep them from getting too hot or cold during transit, replant as soon as reasonably possible once you get where you are going. Best luck with your move!

If I dig up bulbs and am going to ship them or even store them, I use shredded newspaper to both protect them from trauma and to insulate them from heat and cold.

Lilywhit, and also welcome to Florida. What part of Florida are you moving to?

Not sure about the Tiger Lilies, but if you have tall bearded iris or Dutch iris they might not get enough winter chill down here to bloom well. Suggest you leave some of them at your old place, i.e. don't dig up the whole clump. That way if they fail for you in Florida then at least you can go back and visit them in SC.

Wow, 65 years in your garden? Those are some heirloom bulbs! When you get to your new place, try them in pots at first, so you can move them easily. Or at least plant on the north side of your house where they will be in the shade all winter, to be as cool as possible. My daylilies do best on the north side of the house, even though they don't go dormant.

I moved 15 minutes from my old house. I had styrofoam coolers to move everything. I used the same boxes to plant them in for the first two growing seasons. For two reasons. It gave me time to see where I wanted everything planted and I could give them good soil until I amend the garden soil sufficiently.

Since you have had your bulbs so long and you are taking the time to dig them up (I know that is a big undertaking) If they have been in the same planting area for years they usually have pulled themselves down to the death of HE Double hockey.

Just to let you know, we also have a Florida Gardening forum here on ATP, for when you have moved. You'll find lots of good advice and encouragement from people who have had gardens in Florida for years.

The one thing I'd advise you first and foremost is - make your new garden an adventure. Enjoy the new climate and don't try to push the zone to grow things that do well further north, out of sentiment. It's generally a losing battle and will discourage you from trying the many new things that grow well here. People say "Oh, I miss daffodils so much." when you can grow Amaryllis that bloom in the same way for you in Florida. (there are some varieties of daffodils that will grow here too, but probably not the same ones you had at home)

Also good advice!
I would look to see what others in your area are growing to get an idea, and yes, don't rush into things.

@Lilywhit - Do you have any specific species or variety information available for your "bulbs"? As indicated Tiger lilies and particularly many Iris are gonna be a problem. What Zone are you moving from and what what zone to?

@ Cinta - What does "down to the death of HE Double hockey" mean? I know that "bulbs" can move downward over time.

I was going to ask that too, but didn't want to appear stupid..............well, more stupid than normal.

Not positive, but I understood it to mean the bulbs have grown "down to the depths of Hell" HE double hockey refers to the L being like a hockey stick.

I thought exactly the same thing as Elaine...
