If I type in Orchid in the search box, I get a page and a half of plants that start with "Orchid" , then half way through the second page, I'm looking at Daylillys. If I want to see Dendrobiums, or an Oncidium there are a lot listed. This would be of no help to someone trying to ID their plant, if they suspected it was an orchid. Is there any way these could all be listed under an Orchid heading, and be alphabetized by genera? Maybe as a Cattleya X Etc.? I know the boffins keep changing genera, but at least they would all be orchids. Maybe some instruction on the Orchid forum as to how they should be added to the Data base? I have no doubt that a few "orchid cactus" and other plants with the name "orchid" in them would be proposed from time to time, but those could be moved to their proper categories.
I got disgusted with DG over the data base (among other things), but I really would like to see this site be a total success.

I can relate to your dilemma, I've quite a few orchid pictures but know next to nothing about their names or divisions. It'd be nice to have a general entry section for all of them.

Orchids are the one weakness in our database. We might one day make the big architectural changes necessary to support them but until then we're just hobbling along. Have a general entry section for them all is a fine idea, though.

Orchid names is what made me quit my database job at the Botanical Garden where I work.Talk about headache!

I have to agree with Dutchlady1, but a general heading would be some improvement. We got Epiphyllums, and those are mostly hybrids of the true Epi. It just makes sense to me, to help stop the confusion, and if someone is trying to find a match in the data base, it would give them a place to look. Of course, people posting to the data base would have to be re- educated as to how to word their posts. Those of us that grow orchids don't seem to consider that newbys don't know an Oncidium from a Cattleya. No wonder!

No, You only get the ones that say " orchid" before the genera name. Then it starts showing daylilys. If you use the alphabetical search you will find Cattleya, Dendrobium, Phaleonopsis, etc. That's fine if you know what type of orchid you're looking for. If you don't know , you would have to search the entire data base from A to Z to see them all.
Of the ones found alphabetized, only a few show "orchid" in the description, but I suppose if you see Cattleya orchid you would assume that all Cattleyas are orchids.

Oopd ... yeah, I saw that after the fact. I though maybe the DB had been changed so that when you typed in "Orchid", every orchid genus would show up.
