No arrangements for field trials, Della. I was approached years ago about some of the Tango lily seedlings and I declined. It turned out to be a wise decision as I would have lost all of them when the company turned its fields over when they scrapped their US operations.

Here are a couple pix I ran into showing a unique form when the flowers are first opening. The two are siblings.

A couple of photos from my lily seedling garden back in 2001.
First photo shows how the seedlings can grow when they get planted in the ground rather than pots.
I'm posting the 2nd just because I like the combination of lily seedlings in the photo.

Look at all of those beauties. It's really quite a pretty scene. Lots of color and various patterns that are quite special. Do you ever regret not getting them in the market somehow? Or did you find contentment in the place you are now? They are wonderful lilies.

Tracey, no real regrets. Would have been fun to be able to do this for a living though! I'm hoping that at some point I have the time to spend working on more artistic photos of the lilies in the garden. Up until now everything in the garden is very hectic when the lilies are blooming and the photos are done for evaluation purposes and not art. Someday I will transition this into more artistic photos.

The challenge the last couple of days has been to get lily seeds planted. Most years I have been planting 150 to 300 - 3 1/4" pots of seedlings in the basement under the lights. This year I am going to plant only 72 pots (1 shelf worth). There is just too much going on this year to do any more than that. I have made the decision to plant only 18 pots of last years OT cross seeds, as these have to go into the garden in October. The OT seedlings just don't make it through the winter here in pots. The other 54 pots are asiatic crosses and these will go into pots in October.

As I did very few asiatic crosses this last summer I am going back to the seed bank in the freezer for prior years seeds. Quite an adventure. Unlike looking through papers on my desktop, which is like a historical dig with the oldest papers on the bottom. Somehow the seeds from 2012 to 2014 ended up on the bottom of the chest freezer. Hmmm, two cornish hens dated 2010 on top of the latest seeds, guess the freezer needs some cleaning out.

Decided I needed to get some 1c breeding stock with higher bud counts. Found a few photos of my cross of George Slate x Satin Slippers. Both are excellent 1c downfacing lilies. Satin Slippers is a more interesting lily but George Slate holds up better in my garden. Planted multiple pots of these. Also planted multiple pots of 02-401 x Satin Slippers (see photo).

I have noticed in using 'George Slate' pollen and as pod parent, the yellow comes through either way. It has such nice form here and a high bud count. Holds up well and is a little bit taller than a lot of asiatic lilies too. Lots of great traits to pass along to offspring. A great one for any breeding program, I would think.

Hank you sure have a lot of lilies going on there😊 And you should be very proud of what you've accomplished.

As far as your freezer goes, perhaps the most eager seeds have found their way to the top. Perhaps fate? Not sure what the hens are trying to tell you though Hilarious!

Noticed that it's been a bit quiet here for the last few days, so here's a few more pix.

Just finishing up the three favorites question. Number three would be sdlg 243. This lily goes all the way back to my first couple of years work with lily hybridizing. This is a very dark red out to upfacing asiatic lily with near black stems. It carries secondary buds that fill out the inflorescence when the primary buds petals have dropped. The cross was done in 1994. It is probably Chippewa Star x Monte Negro?. It is not in my computer records as they only go back to 1997.

This lily has come and gone in the garden a few times over the years. It still exists in a few pots having been rescued from the rodents that always seem to find it and dig it up. The last 3 photos are from a cross making use of it in 2012.

Thanks Tracey, William, and Rick !!

Tracey, A few pix follow as to what can be expected from George Slate in the crosses. There will be quite a few yellows, but other colors also come from crosses with appropriate parents. In most of the crosses I have used George Slate as the pod parent.

The yellows can be very nice! 'George Slate' itself has such delicate color and form. Maybe I'll just have to continue to drench it with pink pollen. A lot of my GS crosses haven't grown up yet.

We got a puppy last spring and my lily seed beds suffered greatly. She's a digger and went digging through a seedling bed with a ton of crosses in it. Many tags flew and many seedlings lost in that grand adventure. Many GS seedlings suffered in the catastrophe.

GS has given you quite nice seedlings Smiling . I always use it as a pod, mainly hoping for its exquisite form in the garden setting.

Thanks for sharing. Thank You!

I have a few OT seedling photos to post. This one is my best so far. Nothing exceptional about the colors, but it has large blooms with excellent form, and appears to be a good strong lily in the garden. Through a mishap it was scaled before it even flowered the first time. A good number of bulblets formed and were grown on. It has formed a nice small colony. It is pollen fertile, but has not been tested for pod fertility.
