I'm trying to gain some winter tree identification skills and am getting a bit confused on some thorn trees. I've uploaded some pictures, if anyone here has any tips on how to ID this tree. It has thorns on the trunk, but I found several of these and none had any seed pods so I don't think they are a locust. It look like there were a few old berries still on the trees, but its hard to say at this point in the year what they looked like in the summer. It doesn't look like other dawny hawthorns I've found, but the buds on the tips of the twigs look hawthorn-esque, with the little red bud, so maybe it is another kind of hawthorn? If location is helpful, I'm in Indiana.
Are wild crab apples a possibility? Both my dad and I have them in our yards in NW IN.
