Some of Bill's new intros, and unfortunately it was drizzling quite a bit at that time:

PRICKLY SENSATION - I'm ordering this one because it should be good for hybridizing TEETH and I like the different colored eye area that I don't usually see in the toothy ones.

HALLOWEEN COSTUME (He gave us each one of these!) and SULTRY SPANISH EYES

ARCTIC SUNRISE - This is a little beauty, more peachy than pink -- love the eye!

CORRALITOS ROSE and ARRIVE IN STYLE (not a good picture or bloom, but I wanted to give people a feel for the brilliant colors)

APHRODISIAC - This is a beautiful softer yellow, and Bill says it's almost perfect in his eyes -- not beautiful blooms, unfortunately, but you can see the form.

Thanks Rita! We did stop for lunch and then Bill Maryott gave a little talk and slide presentation on his hybridizing and different goals, and pictures of daylilies showing how he has progressed. VERY IMPRESSIVE! And it was so wonderful that the Stamiles were there too!

Love your shots Betty and you got so many different ones than I did. Can you imagine how long we would have been there if it was peak bloom? Another trip, for sure, maybe next year!
And I love OFF BEAT too, also on my wish list, it looked good in that weather as did his PARTY PINWHEEL.

Me too! And the color contrast was really great -- much better in person than the pictures show! The eyes and edges were really a deep dark purple burgundy, and I loved the way the eyes blended/faded into the petals in both directions.

And they will perform so much better in warmer climates! Nothing was opening quite as they should and if they were open, they were not as lush. Those warm summer nights really make all the difference. I am rotating out some of mine that don't open right because we are now 4-6 degrees cooler at night than where I used to live. Now I am focused on only adding EMO (early morning openers) if possible. Spidery blooms seem to do well for me I noticed.

Purple Maze "lived" here but it certainly did not look like that. I bought mine directly from Mort, in bloom, so I am sure it was the correct plant. Mine was quite a bit more narrow, and not nearly as rich in color. When I bought it, John Rice was overwintering a lot of things for David and Mort while they completed their move to KY. While I was staying that weekend, I actually helped move pots onto a trailer as they took them to their new garden. So, the blooms I was first seeing were in John's greenhouse. Even this did not look as round and lush and rich as the ones at Bill's. The growing conditions, soil, and care must create perfect conditions out there! ( is this why Stamile chose California to move to? )

I had a long conversation with Grace as to why they picked CA and their process of buying their home here, which was a short sale like ours.
When they knew they wanted to sell their home and move, they were offered property by so many other hybridizers in various states, the folks in Ohio were trying to temp them up there, as well as Alabama, Georgia and several other states, even her brother Van Sellers Vic Santa Lucia of Iron Gate Gardens in No. Carolina offered them property for free. Since they have been traveling all over the country for years as guest speakers for various clubs and Regionals, they were familiar with the locals and weather. They had started out in NY and knew they didn't want to go back to the cold, FL was too hot and humid past mid afternoon to work in the garden and then all the other offers were similar. They had been coming out here to CA several times for our club meetings and then vacations too and they both really loved it here with the year round gardening. Being near the ocean was high on their list and they had a few other wants for the area, a historic society was one I remember and a few other cultural things on their wish list. They wanted acreage and a single level house. No one knew that they were flying back and forth quite often in their search here and when they finally settled on the town, it took them a few trips to finally find the ideal property. They have a huge house on 5 acres and after they found out the community well wasn't what it was advertised to be, they bought another 5 acres from a former nursery grower who went out of business for overdeveloping his place right before the bottom dropped out. He had added 5 state of the art large greenhouses on the lot.

Pat & Grace are taking various horticulture classes to become familiar with what grows in their local and are making great friends and Grace is starting seeds of all kinds of various plants, using just a tiny portion of one greenhouse. They may eventually do a little daylily pollen dabbing again but she said just for their own fun. They are gardeners at heart and are just enjoying adding to their garden and experimenting. She loves that she can now grow many of the So. African and Australian plants (also some of my favorites!)
She said one afternoon they were sitting on their patio and she asked Pat what he had done today, he rubbed his chin, thinking, and said "Why nothing". And she replied, "Isn't it wonderful?!" All their lives, they have worked, first as teachers and then getting up early every morning to work in the nursery. Now they can really enjoy their retirement. But they sure keep busy!

Interesting! The first time I met them it was at Iron Gate. I was chatting away with them, sitting in the shade, while Vic and Van dug my plant order. I am glad I was just making pleasant conversation!! Thumbs up I thought Vic Santa Lucia was Grace's brother? I seem to remember that was how I was introduced to them when Vic and Van came back with the plants.

Seems so strange to get all those awards and be so successful and just walk away from it all. Shrug!

This is Purple Maze in my WI garden, definitely not pink, it does seem quite happy here, though!

Now Betty, that is exactly the color that PURPLE MAZE is here in my garden. In fact that is one reason that I bought it. I just loved that unusual color.
