I was wondering this also. It looks to be an echeveria but the center still looked o.k. on pic. I must say as much as I can not stand painted plants, that is the prettiest one I have ever seen. It did make it less pretty to know it croaked.

If a few pieces come off try peeling it away, I had one and that's what I did. Eventually more and more areas will flake off.

But not on the cactus spines, that goes away slowly, talking about the aloe or echiveria.

If well cared for, or if the plant came make it for a year, all that paint should not matter. It would have produced all new leaves by that time. Shame of it all is some Echevera have colorful leaves close to what they were selling.

If I see them still around in that particular store, I might spring for one just to try it out.

Ursula had the dead one I referred to. I would never pay for one. And likely would not accept one for free.

A man with the screen name cactusmain posted this video; he tried to remove the paint with water, scrubbed really hard. The water was repelled by the paint.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

In the comment section for the video someone posted the contact information for the company who is doing this horrible thing to plants...they claim to be selling natural plants. Ha.

Contact information for the Kozmic Kaktus company...even though some of the plants are succulents and not cactus.
http://www.markhound.com/trade...

If no one buys these the company will probably go out of business in a hurry.

I searched some more...the company is Altman Specialty Plants but they seem to have no information for the Kozmic Kaktus...perhaps they have discontinued the item?

Good sleuthing @greene I would have probably bought hundreds of dollars worth of plants if not for the the painted and glued on fake flowers. If I wanted fake stuff I would buy silk plants. Personally I hope they do go out of biz. I have had several friends text me pics of their painted goods knowing I am a fan of xeric plants all excited. I hate having to tell them what they really have. These plants that they graffiti are already beautiful and architecturally nice plants.......why why why Shrug!

I am hoping that only the Kozmic Kaktus part of the company goes out of business. Most of the other items they sell look just fine. I had read a post on another site that said Mr Altman produces what the big stores request....so again, even if the big box stores ask the supplier to produce these oddities, if we the consumers do not buy them...well, the big box stores should get the message. Thumbs up

True. I will say that all the plants do look healthy. Problem is, is that so many people that buy them not knowing what's going on have no idea and continue to fuel this crazy fad. I do not seeing this ending any time soon. We had the iron age and the stone age. It seems now is the plastic deception age. This goes way further than garden centers Sighing!

I would like to experiment, but I absolutely refuse to buy any of these painted plants because I do not want the retailers to be successful with them. They will just continue or do something worse! They started with pasting on strawflowers on cacti and coloring orchids and now it is painting cacti and succulents. Ugh!

My biggest gripe is that these plants are naturally attractive as is-- there is no need to "enhance" their appearances. Although I don't like them painted, I cannot throw them out. I will let them grow and keep everyone posted. It appears that there is more green coming thru.

thanks for all the comments.
