These oddities have been showing up for several years now. They are growing near the edge of a gravel parking area. I took these photos a few days ago. This is the first time I have seen this many and to see the different stages of growth. I've only seen a couple at a time in past years and they were already opening.

They are hard like a rock.
Looks to be the newest of the lot.

The colors are striking as they mature. Green with rust striations. Then they fade back to a whitish color.

@Reine I think that is what is commonly called the Texas tuff puffball. Scleroderma texense It is certainly a member of the earthstar/puffball group. It is not edible but just by looking who would be so inclined? Thumbs down I do think some of the greenish coloration comes from the amount of rain Texas has had of late.
