Good looking plants! Thumbs up Have you bought other Austins from them that have prospered?

Be aware of what you order from Edmunds. They have major discrepancies even in their own freaking catalog & the lady on the phone is absolutely NO help. Here's just 1 example:

Page 2 & 3 of the new Edmunds catalog.

Thumb of 2016-01-27/Skiekitty/eb7ba5

Smokin' Hot is described as both a bright orange rose AND as a deep red rose.

http://www.edmundsroses.com/dp...
http://www.helpmefind.com/rose...

I'd lean more towards what HMF says though.

On Page 2 of their catalog, they have "Tropical Lightning", a climber

http://www.edmundsroses.com/dp...

and if you look under the breeder name on HMF, you get a shrub.

http://www.helpmefind.com/gard...

and that's just in the first 2 pages of their catalog. Guess I won't be ordering from them this year again...

Well, looking at the photos...the rose looks red to me in both the HMF
photos. The photo of Smokin' Hot and Wekmopaga, they both look red to me.
Now I don't know much about roses, but are some like Peace grown as climbers and shrubs?
I am not disputing that these may be orange and that they may be listed wrong as climbers or as a bush. I am just wondering if the rose could possibly be deep red in some gardens and come in both a bush and a climber version? I usually buy my roses at Lowe's and that is about a 50-50 chance of even getting the right cultivar. Of course if anything I am guessing about is true or not, then one would expect customer service to be able to answer the questions!

Hey Toni! Glad to see you again!!
I had Smokin' Hot for a while last summer, then killed it. It was a dark orange, a rust color really. It was supposed to fit in with Cinco De Mayo and a row of Coral Drifts, under a smoke tree. Dark Night is taking that spot this year.
This year, I am bypassing both Edmunds and Austin. Regan, Palatine and Rosemania are getting my money this time around. Zuzu, those look like terrific plants from Regan! I ordered the new Austins from them and the new Downton Abbey roses from Rosemania. Both had lower prices than Edmunds, even with Edmunds' free shipping. Austin has 20% off, with code UHC, until March 11, but that isn't enough to compete with the superior service from Regan and Rosemania.
Mike and Neal, thanks for the encouragement on the bulbs. I've been late before, but that was because I was given leftover bulbs very very late in t he season. These are bulbs I bought in October! My excuse is I was so busy working in November and December that I couldn't do anything after working 12 hour days. I was dog tired. .
This week, we're supposed to get into the 60's! Time to dig! Maybe I'll dig the holes for the roses that are coming in March, too.
I am crossing my fingers that the roses don't break dormancy in this warm spell. That's exactly how I lose roses every year. They get more anxious for spring than I do, I think!
Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.

Neal, I've bought 20 or 30 Austins from Regan over the years and only those two were duds.

Lyn, no mud here. I have sandy loam and it never turns to mud. I planted them yesterday.

Toni, great to see you! I threw away the Edmunds' Roses catalogue almost as soon as it arrived, but I remember those discrepancies. They also said Edith's Darling has no fragrance but then added that its perfume fills the air. Smokin' Hot is, as Cindi described it, a rust color. I bought it last year from Rosemania. It's a smoky orange with a white reverse. Very pretty. Tropical Lightning is being sold as a climber, 8-10 feet tall, by Rosemania, so in this case Edmunds' is correct. The HMF description is suspect from the start because it says the blooms are semi-double to double, but all of the photos show full blooms

Zuzu, you got me now.

I have Regan's on another tab on my browser.

I have bought bare root locally before.....none have survived. I kinda think the locals should know when to sell for survivability. My spell check says that's not a word. Zuzu, I know you are not in Florida, but would this be a better time to get the bare roots and plant than in the spring?

Know that the roses I recently bought and put in the ground are doing well, despite a freeze (or 2 or 3 or 4). My roses here seem happiest during the spring months or the late fall months after the dastardly heat is gone.

Molly, if I were in Florida, I'd stick to roses from Nelson's or K&M. Regan's roses are grafted onto Dr. Huey for the most part and won't survive the nematodes for more than a few years, but maybe you're in a part of Florida that isn't plagued by those root nematodes. Why don't you check with a local nursery and ask them whether you're in a nematode-infested location before you order anything but roses grafted onto fortuniana?

Thanks Zuzu, unfortunately, I am undoubtedly in that area of nematode infestation. Smiling I will always hopefully look for encouragement in my need for more roses. However, sage advice WILL keep me from being foolish. Thanks for settling me down.

I will say though that a memory is in there somewhere about the Doc Huey thing. I'll need to look into that some more. Seems like I may have some growing here that are that.

Zuzu,

I did a bit of looking on the fortiana and huey rootstocks. Seems the huey is more hardy to temps than the fortiana rootstocks. Both seem to be resistant to nematodes. In my area, believe it or not, temps can drop quite low for Florida. Last week we were down to 22. Sometime back in '06 or '07 we had a low of 8 degrees.

No matter then it's crap shoot between nematodes and low temps.

In the end, it seems January is a good planting time here, given the right stock

Molly, I promise you that Dr. Huey is not resistant to nematodes. Roses grafted onto Dr. Huey can live a couple of years longer than own-root roses in Florida, but neither option is the best. Fortuniana is the best. Dr. Huey is more hardy than fortuniana, but that's something you'll never have to worry about in Florida, I don't think. Rosa fortuniana is hardy to zone 7a.

Thanks, Zuzu ....

My as my soil has improved, it does get muddy. Altho' I planted one rose last year when the soil was quite saturated, I've held off this year because that rose hasn't taken off well.

I had adobe soil in Piedmont, Lyn, and quickly learned not to do any digging during the rainy season. Digging in oversaturated clay soil ruins the structure of the soil. In my present garden I don't hit clay unless I dig down 5 or 6 feet, so I can dig holes for plants at any time of the year.

Zuzu ...

I am not really complaining. If you remember, when I started it was all rock ... Smiling

Kim says it is the humic acid from the breakdown of all of the organic material I've been putting on top for years that have caused the rocks to disappear.

Our January thaw is almost over. We'll get a couple of inches of rain Thurs and Fri. Sat and Sun will have no rain, but the night temps will be dropping to low 30s to high 20s. Then it's back to rain and snow.

I did get some weeding done today, but I won't be planting anything for a while.

You're way more enthusiastic to be digging 5-6 feet down!!! Last time I dug down deep (to bury my beloved Conan Crying Crying Crying ) I hit sand at about 18" down & had sand the rest of the way down (went down to 3.5ft, planted a October Glory maple over him.. I still miss him and it's been over a year). And if you feel the need to dig holes in the middle of January & want a challenge, you're welcome to come to my house. Right now I *still* have snow from the storm before Thanksgiving.. and we're gonna get probably another foot this upcoming Sunday/Monday. Oh well, it's Colorado weather for you. 60degs Saturday, snow that night and for the next 3 days.

I have to admit I don't habitually dig 5-6 feet down. My little boy used to dig big holes when we moved here, and that's when I noticed that the clay started down there.

I remember your beloved Conan and I can understand why you still miss him. Lovey dubby
