I did buy 2 Ardenium arabicum seedlings from about 12 months old. They Will be shipped bare rooted. How Will I handle it after receiving it. Do they need special care?



These are the plants. I did buy 2 of them. All different types off arabicum. Such as Thai sock, rcn, etc.

@RCanada knows a lot about this. I have not ordered live arabicums before, only obesums.

Do they need different care you think? Well I hope Rick Will read it before I receive them.

They do need special care. Probably best to send them to me to babysit.

They can be treated the same way that any bare root adeniums is treated.
Unpack
Check for any discoloration (rot) If any, cut out until pure white flesh shows w absolutely No biege marks. Treat w sulfur dust and hang in warm/dry place for 2-3 weeks.
Soak in Transplanter fertilizer or Superthrive for 1/2 - 1 Hr.
Plants up into free draining mix. Mix will differ depending on where you reside (climate, etc.)
Water in (some like to leave for a couple days prior to watering in to allow any tender roots to recover first)
Leave in a filtered light situation for a couple weeks. (If in a short growing season climate and in fall-spring, they can be left in a well lit window).
Water as required

I do not know much about the care of arabicums. But is not there a different way of planting the tree according to what kind it is? For example, certain Thai Soco's are planted in such a way to show off the roots eventually. Yes?

You know Kadie. It is really much not that much different that what we do with the Obesum's. They have so many different terms that they use with the Arabicums/Thai soco's. LIke, Centipede trained roots, decorated roots, natrual/virgin roots, etc.
I wish I could figure out a way of how to post the info on differences between Arabicums and Thai Soco's. I have it saved as a Word file. Not sure how I can transpose this to you, as I have wanted to do.

With the Thai Soco's. They can be started as Thai Soco's, but are not considered a true Thai Soco unless they have the traits which are Thai Soco. If this makes any sense? And it would if I could get the darn..... thing for you to read. Pardon me.
Kadie, I have said this many times. I want you to start growing these Arabicums, Thai Soco's, because you have the right climate, but more over. You have the understanding and where with all to do it.

I have an Arabicum Lopbhuri (large) that I recieved from a local fella here. He got them from Thailand many years ago on visit. I was very fortunate and ever grateful for him letting me have one.
The Arabicums do truly grow horizontally across the soil and not deep.

It is interesting to me at least. I remember reading or being told that the Arabicums grow horizontally across the soil and not deep. When I first up rooted this tree, I could see where in fact this was true. It had a solid area underneath with no roots. All roots come from around the caudex perimeter. Unlike trees which have been cut off and new roots grown.
Sorry, not going to unpot to show roots. Something that I wish I remembered to do when transplanting.

Happens to me all the time.

About my Thai Soco's...they sure are slow growers. I have placed two on discs...I had cut the tap root of one of them. The others I have left to continue growing in their 5" pots for now. Will be interesting to see if the tap roots will disappear eventually on their own.
