I live on a hill and underneath what little topsoil I've put in is rocks and caliche. In some areas of my yard there IS no topsoil, so just caliche and rock.

Some of us have small butts Whistling

Seriously, I think the largest I've dug out of my own yard would be maybe foot-sized (I wear a size 7).

Hee, hee, you want rocks? Here's the one we had to dig out when we were putting a shade pavilion in the back yard.

I happen to have a thing about rocks/boulders also. I've brought home nice rocks or boulders from other areas...also some shells. Not too crazy about the softer limestone that I sometimes find when digging around here, however. I have quite a few species of native Texas plants that do quite well on my place. The very extreme droughts in the last five years have brought home the value of xeriscape plants. It's just not worth it to try to grow wholly inappropriate plants that need tons of water!

"Each fall I plant about 200 bulbs -- not on purpose, but they keep following me home from the store, and once you have them, you have to plant them.... right?"

I gotta start using that on my DH! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

"My method would probably make "real" gardeners gasp in horror. Step 1 - open all the bags of bulbs and dump them together into one box. (daffys, hyacinths, crocuses, usually). Step 2 - dig a trench. Step 3 - grab a handful of bulbs and scatter throughout the trench. Step 5 - cover this trench, and dig another one., repeating all 5 steps until the box is empty " Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Thanks, Marilyn! My doggie is a little girl, Lula. She is definitely cuddly and fuzzy (as my carpet can attest! Hilarious! ), but since she is a Great Pyr and a guard dog, she is not particularly friendly to strangers. She was a rescue and apparently had been somewhat mistreated; it took us a few weeks to get her to come indoors at all. But she learns quickly...hee hee, now she knows how to open the door to let herself in! She really is a sweetheart. Lovey dubby , but she's only in the picture for scale. That was a BIG rock!

It was also an expensive rock! I'm thinking about painting it gold and putting a "$" on it. Big Grin It took two (incompetent) guys and me shaming them into digging it out (by me digging under it with my garden trowel and then getting it to move a bit with a big prybar) to get it dug out for the post.....and THEN we fired them. The competent guy we hired to finish the job had to undo everything they had done. But they DID get the rock out! Hilarious!

Oh yes! Rocks are wonderful. I wasn't complaining about my rock, just it's original location! Hilarious! And I like it MUCH better on the surface where I can see it! I even have a fake pile of rocks for a fountain, surrounded by real rocks (but it needs a few more).
