Hurray! I got them all planted Hurray!

Not that I had so many but they were really nice clumps. I would have been finished sooner but the grass cutting guys showed up so I had to stop and wait until they finished up and left.

I guess I have been planting daylilies for so many years that I am just used to getting them planted. Plus I don't see any benefits to leaving any till tomorrow. Might as well get them planted and then it is all done and the plants can settle in to their new home.

Here are two of them planted out in the planterbox out in the front yard. These are the two purple bitone lates. You see a spot I left in the middle were I am going to plant another purple bitone late that I ordered from Westbourne daylilies.

Thumb of 2011-09-15/Newyorkrita/ccc9e3

It doesn't really look like much now but I think next year during bloom season it will look really nice because there will be a grouping of late bloomers all in purple bitone coloring.

Two days after I planted one of the clumps in the back, DREAM SEQUENCE was dug up overnight and just lying on top of the ground. Today I see it is dug up AGAIN and lying on top of the ground again. Fans were broken off first time and even more are broken off this time. It wouldn't have been easily to do as it was really firmed in there planted and those fans would have to be bitten and torn to get broken off.

I put stakes around it this time so it will be even harder to dig up. Honestly I don't know what animal is so interested in digging up this daylily but I wish it would quit already!

We don't have deer. Only squirrels, racoons, possums and stray cats. And this is not a small fan with small roots. It is a big plant with lots of roots. Not very easy to dig up I would think.

I have had skunks dig up freshly planted daylilies. One way they feed is by rooting in dirt looking for insects and grubs.

I have never seen a skunk here but we have woods not far so it is very possible. We get flying squirrels and foxes at night so a skunk would not be any more unusual. Of course I see racoons and possums at night and squirells and stray cats during the day.

Yikes! What a bummer for you! Is there anything you could spray around it that would make it undesirable to an animal -- even hair spray?

That reminds me -- did you ever see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"? Maybe you could try spraying the cure-all -- WINDEX -- around the plant! Hilarious!

Betty, I don't have any hair spray but did go and put stakes and bricks around the plant after replanting. Hopefully that works.

Squirrels are not nocturnal but I agree that a skunk can dig things up looking for food. Not sure a raccoon or possum would do that. As far as foxes, not sure on that one.

Well, yes but the a squirrel could be out there digging really early in the morning before I get out of bed. Plus then I don't go out in the garden right away but sit around by my computer until I wake up.

I woke up one morning a year ago to a very large hole going under one of my daylilies. I kept covering the hole back up only to find it reopened the next day. Turned out I finally spotted the culprit. It was a very large rat. My hubby took his pellet gun and that was the end of the rat.
