And in pasties!

Rita, golden beets are great, beautiful and tasty, although the germination seems to be a little less than other types. Thumbs up

I planted a lot of seeds I think. So we will see what comes up.

I have not grown beets in many, many years. Used to but I grew the more usual beet colored beets. I would boil them up as the veggies to have with dinner.

Sandy,
I think on Crockett's Victory Garden they used Dianzathon, but I don't think that's available anymore. Try diatomaceous earth.

Rita,
Just plant a few to eat fresh.

I got my onion sets yesterday and the garden is too wet. Plus, heavy rain today so that will wait.

I did rake the garden off yesterday. The walnut tree drops debris on it.

Yes, I used diazinon many years ago, but it isn't available now, at least not to home gardeners. Should the DE be worked into the soil, or just sprinkled on the surface?

I think sprinkled. I just looked at a bag in the store but didn't plan on buying it so I didn't look. It's supposed to be safe around animals but I did see you shouldn't inhale it.

Turnips are up. In fact they popped up two days ago. Nothing on the beets as yet.

Rita,
What a difference a zone makes! Beets do seem to take longer. I could plant peas if it wasn't so wet.

Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Hurray, the beets are starting to sprout. Big Grin

The turnips I started indoors I don't think will work out. The little guys are tall and spindly so don't look like they will be making great transplants. I might just have to direct sow.

Maybe putting the turnips out in the sun would help? (they're pretty hardy; in fact, maybe part of the problem is that they're too warm indoors)

If it was nicer I would put them out but it is too cold today. By Wednesday the warmth should be back and my seedlings will go outside during the day again.

It was just something I tried. I only loose a few seeds if it doesn't work out. And I have plenty of seed left.

Rita,
That's the mistake I make starting cabbage and broccoli in the house. No matter how low the lights I get leggy. I was told they are started outside or direct sowed. That's the plan this year.

I usually direct sow. But I got the idea to start some inside this year. Sometimes you just gotta try it even if it doesn't work out.

You may have better luck. The first year I had big bulbs and they got hot. Eventually we replaced all of them with the smaller cooler bulbs. That didn't help either. I think the little sprouts just got too hot.

My set up is very basic but my bulbs don't throw out much heat.

Rita,
Now you did it. I sowed 9 containers of broccoli and cabbage this morning. I see they soaked up the water so I'll be taking them to the garage. It's unheated and they should do better out there.
