Anna,
I've considered growing a sweet onion this year along with my keeper onions. I'd like to try the onion soup on my own. Right now, I'm frying onions as a side. We used to have that when I was a kid.

Sylvain,
You and Gail do such a good job of making your Dad's days happy. It will all work out and if he has a happy place while it does, then he will be OK too.
I agree. I love Anna's smile!
Simple soup, yet it sounds divine! If I remember, my SIL did the beef broth and I'm sure we used a bouillion cube.
Yayyy Lucy! Well fed.
WOW! Lucy is gorgeous and famous!! She is the picture of health and very lucky to be the beloved family member.
I didn't know you took her outside. Does she ever want to get down?
I agree on her being a good pet, she doesn't ask for much and you are more than willing to lavish attention on her. She decides if she wants it or not. I'm thinking she's smarter than a wild snake.

Hi Susan!

Woofie,
I hope you can find your pictures. I'd love to see your Baby!

Anna,
Cool! How many cows do your milk and what kind are they?

Dirt,
Laughing! Peppercorns here too!

Sylvain, I have never heard a snake snore. I didn't even know they did that - so I learned something today. I'd love to hear Lucy snoring. I'm thinking about making a Bucket List and perhaps I'll put that on it. Smiling

White Oak or some folks would say grey rat. I always say White Oak hence her/his name.

I rarely see a snake anymore. Usually it would be a garter or bull snake. Sadly, I saw one run over out front this spring and it was an Eastern Fox Snake. I have never seen one before and now this one is gone.

Sally, here are a couple of the cows the day of our sale. Not bad looking for a bunch of grades. (not registered).

In the first pic, the cow with the large udder had just freshened and still had quite a bit of edema. I didn't, as a rule, keep cows with udders like that AFTER they lost the swelling. They were a PITA to milk.

That udder looks painful, like having an overlarge set of breasts - uncomfortable.

Love the snake picture - have never seen a White Oak (grey rat) snake. I wonder if Lucy would react to be put close to another of her species.

Anna,
They are indeed nice looking, but that udder makes me wince, lol!
How many do you breed? Do you keep your herd at the same number or do you breed specifically for the extra milk she puts out?

Stillwood,
Laughing! I was thinking of how hard it is to ''adjust'' in bed after rolling over!!

Stillwood,
ROTFL! It's not too bad, but sometimes... I would never wish for really big ones!

Sally, she was one of the older ones and sometimes they got pendulous. We don't have any livestock, we sold them all at an auction on our farm on Oct. 1, 2010. Now we do relief milking for farmers that want to get away. The picture of me in the parlor is the guy's place where we are for 8 days. He and his wife went to Hawaii. We have milked for him several times.

We do not advertise, all our farmers are strictly from word of mouth. We have a 9 day job in April. That farmer got our names from the one that we are milking for now.

There are also a couple that no matter when they call we are busy. Rolling on the floor laughing

Hi, everyone.

It's a beautifully sunny morning here in Delray-les-Brises. We are expecting cooler temps today, only going as high as 74F. We'll survive. The furnace just kicked in and coffee will be very nice when it finishes dripping. I woke up hungry, something I don't often do. I'll wait until dad puts in an appearance to make breakfast. Toast with 8-year old cheddar and coffee sounds nice.

Lucy was so wrapped up in her jungle gym last night, I didn't have the heart to untangle her. I'll get my snake fix a bit later on today. Right now, she's in her heated cardboard box. The sun is shining directly into her vivarium and I know she doesn't enjoy that part of the day. She's secure in her box, no problem.

Dinner last night was excellent. Oh, how nice the house smelled with that onion soup bubbling gently in the kitchen. The quiche was great. The Caesar salad added that bit of zing a bland dish like quiche requires. The baba au rhum was just a case of gilding the lily. So what? We decided to live a little. So sue us!

Ah, dad just brought me a cup of steaming coffee. I didn't even know he was up and about.

Anna, I know from experience that keeping livestock is a full-time, 7 days a week job. When my friend raised boars, they had to leave for about a week. I took a week's vacation from work and moved in to take care of the boars. I would feed the boars, change their water, wash the boars with the hose and a scrub brush(they loved that), give them a drink from the hose, sit on the ground with them, feed them fallen apples, take them for a walk in the nearby field. It was a blast. I would sit down on the ground and they'd park themselves around me. Some would lay down, others would want to be scratched and the rest just stood around and watched for predators. One of them liked to sit behind me, with its back against mine. When my friends returned, I told them about playing with them and going for walks with them. They were horrified. It seems I could have gotten hurt. I had to say Nay, Nay. Those delightful ungulate artiodactyla enjoyed the company, the attention and the apples. Had my friends been gone 2 weeks, I might have taught those boars to ride a bicycle on the country road in front of the house. I am certain your services are mightily appreciated when those farmers need to get away from it all. And your name must get around quite a bit. Running a milking parlor is not a learn-as-you-go thing. Experience is required so everything runs smoothly. I tip my hat to you.

I am currently shopping for a cruise. My cruising buddy wants to sail in December. I have found an interesting ship and itinerary. I have to get some prices today. Just like car buying, cruise agencies all guarontee the lowest price available and the best perks in the industry. One of them gave me that song and dance yesterday. I answered that had I received a nickel in the mail every time I heard that, I'd be on a world cruise right now. That person at the other end of the line had no sense of humor, whatsoever. I may well not deal with them. And she was pushy, too. "Time is running out.", she said. "You might as well book right now and avoid disappointments.". I smirked. Listen here, Grizelda. The ship sails in December. This is January. I have sailed 26 times before. I think I have a few days to make up my mind. It's like those TV car dealership ads that purport: "Run to get your brand-new car because our prices are so low, we'll run out of cars before you get here". Gimme a break, already!

I have grocery shopping on my to-do list today. I'll get that done this morning. My back is killing me. What else is new? Tylenol is slowly working its magic; never fast enough when you're in pain. I sneezed a few minutes ago and the pain in my lower back was intense. Men were not built to withstand pain. And I have to admit that I am hypersensitive in the first place. And if my back doesn't give me a break today, grocery shopping can always wait until tomorrow. It's not like we are a soggy cracker away from starving in this house.

Take care, everyone.
Sylvain.

I just noticed someone gave me an acorn. Thank you. Is that a good thing? Now, if I am gifted more acorns, what do I do with those? Do I get a jar of Nutella in the mail when I accumulate 500 acorns? Does anybody know?

Puzzled in Delray-les-Dunes.

Sylvain - you outdid me! I got some 6 year old cheddar and it was delicious. But yours was 8 yrs old. Shall I try for 8.5 or 9 yrs old?

I also have not figured out exactly what to do (if anything) with acorns. I had a few (given by various people) but seem to have lost them when Dave consolidated my account. I would also like some Nutella. (Actually I have a jar in the cabinet, but have not eaten any since July. I made up my mind to lose the weight I had gained since moving to Alabama and my DIL's great cooking. So Nutella went off the list - I really like it, but "once on the lips, forever on the hips". I have reached my goal and am not going to have to do it all over again in the spring. Rita on the healthy thread is a real inspiration to keep up walking and exercising (although I am never going to rival her for distance.).
