I have a plant I bought from High Country Gardens. They label it as Rabiea 'glenn, a cold hardy mesemb'. I looked in the database and see a few Rabieas but no 'glenn' . Where can it go?

The Catalogue of Life shows no Rabiea with the species name of glenn, I wonder if it could be a cultivar with the name 'Glenn'?

I think it has to be a cultivar, but we don't have it in the database. Am I correct in thinking that until it's in the cat of life we can't put it into our database?

Karen, you can add it to the database. Click the area that says Add a new plant to the database and enter the information as follows:

Primary common name: Rabiea

Accepted botanical name
(Genus species): Rabiea

Cultivar: Glenn

Then click on the green area that says Proceed to step 2. It will go into the queue for a databatase moderator to approve and you will be notified when it's done and then you can add your photos. Smiling

Here is the information on your beautiful plant Karen. It is a species that was named after the area it is from.

High Country Gardens:
1" tall x 4-5" wide. Rabiea sp. Glenn (Glenn Cold Hardy Mesemb) is a handsome succulent that blooms in late winter/early spring with large quarter-sized bright yellow flowers. The chunky angular leaves grow to form a tight mat of foliage that wedges itself into the rocks of its native habitat. This has been one of the best, most cold-hardy species in HCG cheif horticulturist David Salman's Santa Fe rock garden and has an enormous tap root that is best wedged between two deep rocks at planting time. This unidentified species of Rabiea was originally collected at high elevation near the town of Glenn, in Free State, South Africa.

Your welcome Karen. What an awesome plant. Thank you for posting this question, now I will have to add at least one to my raised beds.

Great information Lynn and since it's an unidentified species I should not have told Karen to enter Glenn as a cultivar name. I guess we need a "General Entry" for Rabiea. I don't think it should be listed as species Glenn since species names are lower case and there is no species as yet at the Catalogue of Life:
Rabiea albinota (Haw.) N.E. Br. Species accepted name
Rabiea albinota var. longipetala L. Bol. Infraspecific taxon synonym for Rabiea albinota (Haw.) N.E. Br.

Karen, have you submitted it for database approval yet? We can request a "General Entry".

Great idea Lin.
It could reside there until a positive identification is made.

Unfortunately I put it in right away. They can kick it out and make the general entry.

I can only find two references to this plant, High County Gardens and B & T World Seeds, both list it as Rabiea species 'Glen'.
It would seem the parentage is unknown.
