Just bought "Jewel Blend" & "Alaska Variegated" Nasturtium seed at the nursery yesterday. Love variegated plants. The nursery was selling individual pots of nasturtium for $3.49 each! Wow! Both packs of seeds weren't that much. I could probably go ahead and plant them in the ground in my zone but will start them inside just to be sure. Love these plants Lovey dubby

It is a lot better to just buy seeds. Hi Mary, I think I remember you from the old Gardenweb. I was ddiverblue there.

I grew 'Alaska' last year, because I also love variegated leaves... but I just wasn't that impressed with these; the leaves just kind of looked "washed out" to me, LOL.

Hi Karen....yes, I was at old Gardenweb. My how time flies! Off topic a little, although I'm sure they sold nasturtium seed or plants....don't you miss Baker's Nursery? Sighing! wonder if there is a thread for that.....hometown nurseries we miss.

Hi Sandy...I hear you about the washed out look. The ones they were offering at the nursery yesterday had really distinct markings. Wonder if there is more than one type of variegated nasturtium? Confused The plants were really healthy and sturdy looking. Just could not bring myself to pay that for one plant.

I do miss Bakers a lot! I understand they sold for a lot of money. Those downtown properties are worth so much now. My parents had a lot of land, but they sold out too early.
I'll look for seeds of varigated ones. I'm fond of any varigated plant.

Mary and Karen -- the more I think about it, I wonder if the leaves looked kind of washed out because the plants were growing in flower boxes on our deck railing, on the south side of the house; do you usually grow them in full sun like that, or is it better to grow them maybe where they get sun for a shorter time during the day?

Sandy...Full sun here in the Phoenix area in the summer would wash out or fry the leaves of nasturtiums. They do better for me with part sun and more shade in the afternoon. Because of our zone, they would probably react to full sun sooner in the season than your zone.

Karen...let me know if you want some variegated seed. Would be glad to send you some. Smiling

I've always had them in part shade in hot climates.
Mary, I'd love some varigated seed. I'll send you a tree mail. Thank You!

Well, I wouldn't characterize my climate as hot, but in midsummer the sun from the south, near the house especially, is pretty brutal; I think the nasturtiums will go elsewhere next year! Smiling
