Name: Paul Utah (Zone 5b) Grandchildren are my greatest joy.
Snails have not yet been a big problem in my garden so I haven't felt a need to find any preventative. There are also deer in my area year round. They eat the young growth on some of my roses each spring and I see shrub damage around the neighborhood. So far they have left my Hostas alone.
Marilyn - that's a nice Regal Splendor. I think mine is too close to my Linden tree and I've noticed over the years that the hostas too close to that tree don't reach their potential. I'm trying to determine a better location for mine so that I can move it.
As far as slugs, I have some copper mesh netting that I cut and use around some of the most vulnerable hostas and it seems to help. But mostly I use ammonia and water early in the season and then again as needed during the season. Early in the season, if dumped at the base of the hostas, it will kill hiding adults as well as eggs. 1 part ammonia : 10 parts water
I don't have a problem with slugs. I find snails on my plants, but they're easy to pick off and smash. I take walks daily to see if there are any problems I need to address. Usually it's moles pushing up my plants or southern blight once the heat and humidity hit. I have a lot of pine needles for mulch and have read that helps with slugs and snails. Have I mentioned that I hate my auto correct????

Here's the steep hillside from 2013. I've decided that it's too much to take care of so I'm slowly moving plants off and letting it get taken over by ground cover. I'm going to see if the extra large ones will be okay, but smaller ones keep getting washed down the hill!
This is from the north end of the same bed.
One more shot from the top of the hill

I use "Scotts EcoSense Slug B Gon" slug and snail bait, ready to use granules, will not harm pets, birds or wildlife, contains ferric phosphate, which they say is a compound commonly found in soils.
To prevent slugs, I do not mulch anywhere near the hostas, and early in Spring, I remove all dead leaves. This assures that slugs do not have a place to live. I water every day, but the slugs to not survive since they do not have a place to live.
I haven't had much luck with hostas in pots...I either over water or let them dry out too much! If I have liners that I start in small pots I have to have them by my annuals or I will forget to water them!

Patriot has had to struggle in this bed because of a small evergreen, but this past summer I moved the small tree to a new location so I am hoping to see more growth and blooms.
I don't think I posted 'Wide Brim', it looks like I can't go back to the start of the thread to check it out. Anyway, this one is quite lovey and has done well in the same bed, it was farther away from the tree.
