There are a lot of possum in the woods where I live. I catch glimpses of them every now and then, mostly at night when I'm driving in or out. Two possum stories for you - both sitings were when I used to leave for work around 4:15 am:
I had just rounded the bend in our lane when my headlights picked up something in the gravel road and I could hear horrible screeching. As I got closer, I realized it was a huge owl who had a possum in its clutches. That poor possum was screeching and struggling to no avail. I could see the owl contemplating his options - stay and finish the task at hand or get the heck out of the road and my approaching car. After a few minutes, I guess the owl decided his own self preservation was more important, let the possum go, and then took off in flight. Not that I would have run over that owl, but he didn't know that. The flight take off was impressive. Lucky possum waddled as fast as possumly possible and took cover in the undergrowth on the side of the lane.
Another time at that same bend, again my headlights picked up something in the road. It was the oddest shaped critter and I approached slowly trying to figure out what it was. All of a sudden, the critter turned sideways and I saw that it was a mama possum with all the little possum babies clinging to her back. Really cute.
