Great scores there, Ibis! I really need to visit my Lowe's soon, haven't been there for a while.

I agree Great score on some healthy specimens. Thumbs up I'm dying to get that bromeliad. I wonder if I can find one on clearance. I won't tell you all about the combo bromeliad pot on clearance for $15, that I walked away from when I was visiting family out of town recently. I already had 2 other plants in my cart and didn't want DH to have a cat, so I left it. I've been kicking myself since, because I know that I should have gotten it. It was the only pot left. Sighing!

You are all making me so jealous!! Both HD and Lowes are more than an hour's drive away for me... but now I'm thinking I really need to get to Lowes anyway!

Take a day trip just for the fun of it, when and if you're able. That's what I do. That's when you find the bargains. Or, if you're in the area for business or a doctor's appointment, that's a good time to stop by. Also, whenever and wherever I visit relatives, I scout their Lowe's and HD stores, if they have one or if there's one along the way.

IbisFla said:I stopped by my favorite Lowe's today around lunchtime, and the vendor guy was pulling plants to put them on clearance Hurray! Hurray! I snagged 2 pony tail palms ( in nice ceramic pots) and a Silver Vase (blooming) bromeliad, for $5 each! The regular price of just the brom was $17.98, and it's even got a tiny offset starting. I'll enjoy the pretty pink flower for now, and transplant it later. The pony tails will have to be repotted as well, but I'll be able to use the ceramic pots for something else. Today was a good plant day Green Grin! Green Grin!

@lbisfla that is the Lowes 5.00 Bromelaid that started my new "Bromelaid obsession. I kept stalking Lowes to see which one they would put on sale next. Hilarious! I think I picked it up last Dec I have 2 babies around it now.

I have rental property and I have to go to the hardware store a lot because the tenants have broke something. I go to the plant section first for my calming therapy. It make me feel better when I have to get something fixed for the renters.

Much of my garden is comprised of rescues, and I love bargain hunting. We have a Lowe's here that almost always has a rack or 2 of marked down plants. I check it out about once a week from early spring through late fall.

Last fall I got a 'Forest Pansy' redbud, an ornamental patio peach, and a kousa dogwood for $15 each Hurray! All 3 had been on my want list for a long time.

Last summer they got in a bunch of 2 varieties of Kordes rose. There were so many I knew they all wouldn't sell and the leftovers would be discounted. Sure enough, got 'em both half price- $10 each.
This one with no photo yet, labeled 'First Crush'
Rose (Rosa 'Constanze Mozart')

And this beauty was labeled 'Summer Romance':

I would love to have a "Forest Pansy," Neal ! I don't think they're quite hardy enough for where I live, though -- even the normal redbuds are pretty marginal (although I do have one that I planted a couple of years ago and it's survived some pretty harsh weather so far). I hope yours does well!

Wow Neal, great deal on that Forest Pansy. I haven't seen one for less than at least several times that amount.

How lucky Neal, none of our Lowe's has ever put a rose on the "rack". I should probably check more often.

I was out looking at my rose rescues from Lowes today. I used them on the patio so I would have fragrance up close to the seating areas.

I do not have luck with rose survivals in my garden anyway so I buy them discount and use them as annuals if they do not survive. We had a mild winter so they are looking good. They are even growing already.

I picked up two Rose Pinata 5.00 each
Thumb of 2016-02-21/Cinta/2792a9

two Pink Drift rose for 3.00 ea
Thumb of 2016-02-21/Cinta/cbc46b

and Mr. Lincoln for 5.00.

Even if you lose a few of the roses, you should still get at least a season's worth. And for the price, it's worth giving them a try. Hurray!

We do!! every time we go to the nursery or the garden center, we always look in the clearance racks. never know what you'll find! last year we made a big score on some grasses and a few hostas that appeared to be set in the sun too long. the year before that we got three knock out roses for 15 dollars! of course the money we saved on the roses left us with plenty to get three pots!

What a great score, Jason. This is what really baffles me about the diff between Lowe's and HD. At Lowe's the clearance racks are a big draw for a lot of gardeners who then buy other stuff, because who can walk through a nursery and not buy a pot, or a bag of fert or whatever.

If this conversation went viral on social media that a large chunk of consumers prefer Lowes to H.D. because of their policy on plants that might change. If I owned a retail chain and saw this discussion I would install permanent sale racks just to draw in people for other purchases Angel

Pinatas were a compliment magnet last yr on the patio. Hilarious! I knew I could get a few yrs in a pot because I had one before in a pot for 5 yrs. They bloom all summer.

You get more impact from some perennials in pots than annuals and if you find them on clearance it is cheaper than annuals than buying a bunch of annuals to fill a pot.

The problem with rescuing plants from places like home deport or Lowe's is it just encourages them to keep doing what they are doing

Educating them is better if it can be done

I scored a number of pots of the "Tiny" series at HD last summer. They were simply nearly done blooming. They were $1.00 per pot. I too always check out the gardening section first when shopping at Lowes or HD or Menards. Pretty unusual for me not to be able to find something that should come home with me!

That may be true if you were buy them at full price, but when you buy a plant at 50% off or more they are losing money. They are just trying to salvage what little they can rather than throw them away and take a total loss.
