Keith, if you're near a library, see if they have a book called The Triumph of Seeds by Thor Hanson. He explains seeds in such a way that anyone can understand....even me! If your library doesn't have the book, ask if they can borrow it from another library.
The voyage of the coconut is fascinating. The palm trees are usually close to the shore and drop their coconuts onto the sand. High tide washes some of them into the ocean where they can drift for up to three months. While they float along, the endosperm begins to solidify, but leaves some of the coconut water as liquid. When the coconut finally hits land, the coconut water inside helps the coconut germinate. The thick, rich, white coconut meat feeds the coconut "seed" until it sprouts. Amazing stuff!
