Nice blooms, Becky! I grow purslane partly as an edible plant. Goldenleaf Purslane is good as an edible that way and this year I am trying Greenleaf Purslane.

Was checking out all the new cubits and happened in your introduction to see you had noted purslane was edible. I was intreged. Thsi is the first time in all the years I have been aroudn it that I have heard that.

Is it all the different purslanes and the hyrbids too or just certain ones. I have seed I sowed of it and now wondering when it grow s up, when and how do you it eat. Is it good for you , meaning like does it have some good vitamins or health food properties to it?

Amazing. Simply amazing!

I use it in salads but you can also steam it, fry it and bake it. Actually, it was Ghandi's favorite food and a huge staple in the middle east. I am opening a recipe forum here.

Purslane is a source of heart-friendly omega-3 fatty acids and iron. It is also high in vitamin C; and contains some beta-carotene and calcium.

no. Rolling my eyes.
Just kidding...it is a litle tart and a little lemony.
Someone said alone it is bittter but it's not to me but then I don't eat it alone. Old stems can be more bittter...so eat the new ones. It grows very fast! The Lowes in our area always sell it.

Becky. I have eaten purslane since I was a child. I love it and don't find it bitter. : )
My DIL is from Lebanon, purslane is a regular part of their meditteranian diet. She gave me seed for the one they use. It is an upright form and very tasty. I have not noticed the blooms on it. I will have to pay attention this year and post a picture.

Lynn, thanks for that info! I'd love to see what you have.

When I first starting eating purslane in 1999 I read a lot about it and from what I gathered, it's VERY popular in the meditteranian diet. I think the only time I found it bitter personally was when I ate "old" stems at the end of the season. I think the more popular variety for eating is not the ornamental purslane with the blooms. I made a salad once with the hot pick petals on top...it was a hit!

If you look closely, youll see a praying mantis who liked it a lot too!
