I agree That's a beauty, Roberta.

Warm, overcast and windy today with a 70% chance of rain. We are getting the tail end of the big cold front that is moving through the east coast now. I wish it would rain and get it over with.

Elaine, I too have had orchids spend the night in the pool. The bad news is the floating debris and repotting. The good news is the plants will recover nicely and the soft scale will die by the thousands.

A new bloomer out in the OC is this refugee from the Republic of Schomburgkia, which you may recall was overrun by rebel boffins, scattering the residents from Mexico to South America and changing their names into incomprehensible drivel. I give you what is now called Caulaelia [Cll.] Star of Rio 'Rose' AM/AOS. The Schoms will rise again I tell you.

Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Too funny Jim. That is a beauty in spite of the name(s).

The edge of that storm is skirting us and it has been pouring since last night. I can't imagine what those in the middle of it are getting. My poor citrus is under water again.

In case anyone is interested...I found this link somewhere else here on ATP (but I don't remember where)...it's an Eagle Cam and it's just fascinating to watch! There are 2 babies and as I write this they are being fed by either mom or dad...it's great if you're interested!

Although the Schomburgkians have been scattered far and wide, a few have shown up in the Myrmecophila Peninsula. Now they have to decide whether to keep their Schomburgkiaisms or adapt to new cultures. I am for supporting their attempts to regroup in their homeland.

I think Jim would agree heartily with you, Daisy. He likes the name Schomburgkia a lot better. Me, I'm just generally against changing names of things that have been known as one thing for many years, just for the sake of something mundane like science.

Missed Jim's post above this one - very nice show there Jim.

Schomburgkia flows a lot easier of one's tongue than Myrmecophila, unless one is thinking of a cough... Smiling
Jim, your 'Rose' is a beauty!
Elaine, good looking Copper Queen!

My Laelia anceps opened a couple of spikes. A few late spikes didn't make it, but these opened fine.

And I actually managed to keep this Phal alive for a year and a half, and it starts blooming. I had bought this one with a small Tillandsia on the same mount and I kept it vertical outside over the Summer.

Daisy, you and Jim need to write a sitcom..or at least an episode for Star Trek. Hilarious! Hilarious!
Bert that's a gorgeous plant..certainly ribbon worthy!
Elaine, I just checked my Copper Queen as I was doing the plant shuffle..
I rushed over to Lowes and got this rig on wheels I'm not sure that it would roll through the sliding glass door because it's quite tall..but in any case , I would need a wedge at the threshold and probably a lot of plastic wrap to hold everyone in!

No buds or blooms for me, but almost as exciting...I beat the torrential monsoon..all that's left outside are the Vanda's, and ( hopefully) I'll get a break before the cold streams in behind the front.
Ursula your Laelia anceps is striking...love the lip on that one!
I got a better picture this morning of Rlc. Haw Yuan Gold ' Yung Kang #2'

Lynsday, they roll easily if you got the large wheels. I took the top poles off and need to go to the HD to get adapters and then I will have plenty of room for mine, just at a level I can see them.

Lindsey, if I didn't have those aluminum rods creating the frame work for the closet shelves in my greenhouse and cage, I would have bought these racks. They are very versatile and last forever!

Way to go, Lindsey. I think those rolling racks are what I'll be going towards next winter.

I've been waiting for the rain, and it has just now started here. Wanted to let all the orchids get a good soaking of rain water before I bring them in. Guess now I'll be working in the dark in my foul weather gear, though . . Rolling my eyes. Really thought the rain would be here sooner, and it looks like we're just going to get the tail end of the storm (as usual). Thankfully, it's still warm though.

I have three huge, 7' tall rolling racks in my garage but none of them in a greenhouse. They make strong and durable storage for just about anything you want to load on them.

when I worked at Lowe's , I used to get for free, very similar racks that you see the fall and spring bulbs displayed on in the garden center. It's the same technology, but they are usually black and only about 4' tall. I had them in my greenhouse and they were perfect.( there they are , in my profile pic!) ...I can't tell you how painful it was to actually BUY something like this!!!
My house is like a cave and the only light I get is at this sliding glass door for a few hours a day in the afternoon. Hopefully it will keep everyone sort of happy for the week that they will be inside. I really do need to win the lottery!

They will surely be fine.
I have a couple of those grow light bulbs in a cheap clamp light on a timer over some of my succulents for those darker Winter months.

We had a couple of unexpected inches of fluffy snow this morning and now the sun is out and everything is melting away, including the snow on the greenhouse roof.
Laelia anceps looked kinda pretty there, I thought. Smiling

I found 2 blasted buds from Pot. Lisa Taylor Gallis 'H & R' on the floor this morning Grumbling
The good news is that the last time it bloomed 4/2013 it only had 1 bud.
