Sunnyvalley has been posting some lovely photos, and some are of roses that weren't previously in our database. I love it when we attract new members from other countries. @Orsola from Poland has added more than a thousand rose photos to our database in the last six months.

ALL of which are making me extremely envious !

Speaking of chickens in hot pursuit, the lead character on "The Big Bang Theory", Sheldon Cooper, is always lamenting the fact that he is still traumatized by a chicken having chased him up a tree as a child.

I used to get mugged by the neighbor's rooster on my way to feed the cows. He taught me to throw him a handful of feed as "toll" to pass his house.

I had no idea that chickens and roosters could be so aggressive.

Mostly the roosters get aggressive, my friend has one and she has to keep a broom nearby, he becomes an attack chicken when she enters the coop. They are protecting their hens and some can become quite serious about it, going after the hand that feeds them so to speak.

Yes porkpal, we know who's laying, they start squatting if you try to pet them, a submissive move to accept a rooster. We also often go down and see the two sitting in the nest. I wait around nd then collect the warm eggs. A third one now doing the submissive thing but no egg from her yet.

Wonderful seeing these new roses from new members!! Thumbs up

I have just noticed a message, amongst the numerous I have received for uploading pictures and a couple of new roses, that I have been 'tagged'.
Please excuse my ignorance, I am still trying to get used to all the 'acorns', 'thumbs' and 'badges' ect.

I joined ATP because I think it is an amazing website with a wealth of info. What I particularly like is the combination of the factual and social aspects of gardening!

This is my first actual post on the rose forum so here is a quick intro. I am originally from South Africa, lived in Sweden for a couple of years and settled in Switzerland 19 years ago. Our current garden was totally neglected when we bought the place 8 years ago so we started from scratch again. We have always had a rose or two in our gardens but in the old days roses were grouped in colours and either smelt or didn't!
My fascination with roses started about 5 or 6 years ago. I have since increased my collection mainly with HT's. I also started breeding my own roses 4 years ago (but really small scale due to lack of space) and propagate them by cuttings and grafting onto Rosa Canina rootstock.

@ Neil (gemini_sage) - thanks, glad you like King's Macc and La Rose du Petit Prince (BTW-not 'de Petit' as the label on one of my pics shows!)

Thanks to everyone for their thumbs up's - I don't know if a thank you is expected - maybe somebody can give me some tips on ATP etiquette.
regards

Welcome! sunnyvalley! Very cool that you're doing some hybridizing and grafting/budding. I think of thumbs up and acorn tips as nice ways to let members know I like and appreciate their contribution without clogging a thread or comment section just to say "I like that!".

Hope we get to see lots more photos of your lovely roses Smiling

@sunnyvalley

You can tag someone by using the @ symbol and the member ID with no spaces between the symbol and the member ID (doesn't work using their name, unless it happens to be the ID). Smiling

If you want to say thank you for thumbs, you can do so in the thread or by treemail, but it isn't necessary. Often the threads move so fast, you can't keep up with them, anyway. Big Grin

Really relaxing Philip - got the music going in the background right now!
The weather here has gotten colder again, around 0C with a very nasty wind going so with the chill factor it feels more like -3C. Can't believe it was so warm on the weekend.
I forgot to mention that I planted three new bare root roses last Friday (Madame Anisette, Alexandrine and Paul Ricard). Not something I would normally do in February but I suppose the nursery thought that seeing as the weather was so mild they would ship earlier than the stated first week of March! I was rather surprised when I got the message to say the least. Thank goodness the weather played along and the ground wasn't frozen. Piled them up with a whole lot of compost and covered the lot with burlap.
And the best of all about the delivery was that it also had my new leather pruning gloves (gauntlets). 'Gold Leaf Tough Touch' and boy are they wonderful!!! Never had anything like them - no more bleeding scratches or pricks for me this pruning season!

Sunvalley,..thank you!,..oh boy you have -3C temperatures,..thankfully you managed to plant your three rose bushes while the weather was a bit warmer over the weekend,..the compost and covering of burlap will protect them,.. though roses are pretty strong young bushes would not be likewise,..you did well in protecting them.
Congrats on your new gloves,..even more so being gauntlets Thumbs up how often have i set out to do some pruning or dead heading thinking i will be careful and not get thorns embedded in my flesh,..then thinking,..ouch,..should have worn gloves Whistling

A friend took me out for a birthday lunch and shopping spree. I bought four Austins: an Evelyn and a Jubilee Celebration to replace my ailing Evelyn and Jubilee Celebration, and two that will be new to my garden -- Strawberry Hill and Boscobel. I also bought a couple of Abutilons and a couple of Camellias because I can never have too many of those.
