I have planted daylilies (hemerocallis). They carry my garden through after the iris and peonies are finished. There are many cultivars to chose from and you can get extra early varieties to very late varieties so you can really extend the season.

Me too, Diann! I need to do a better job of spreading lilies that bloom at different times around the beds--seem to have early bloomers in a single bed....only have the earliest daylilies open now and Shasta daisies, they're doing great this year. Don't they just look so cheerful?

This June/July is extremely dry in Toronto, my Asian lilies are rather pathetic and even blanket flowers are not that great. I guess time to turn to lavender Smiling

Catmint (nepeta) works, too, in dry areas (or during drought like we are experiencing in Ontario this year). The only problem with catmint is that many cultivars tend to sprawl and need a large planting area. I am going to try corralling mine early in the spring with some strategic plant stakes and green twine to see if I can improve on that. My daughter did that in her garden and it was very effective and not noticeable.

I love lavender, but have a hard time keeping it alive for more than a few years. It does well for a few years, and then a hard winter will kill it. Maybe you would have more success in Toronto than I do here (Eastern Ontario).

I also did not have a great success with lavender so far, but looking at my dry grass every day makes me wonder whether I should try harder... Walker's Low is ok so far, but also is not thriving. Magnolia that I planted a couple of years ago does not look well with all dry leaves and ferns are almost gone as a dry sticks. Really dry. I water peonies once in a while and guess that I should do it more often.

Not luck here at all with lavender. Walker's Low grows very well here, in fact have to keep digging trenches around it to keep it in check. Not too hard to do, just need to be persistent.

It would be nice to find the perfect perennial to add a nice drift of blue in the summer garden! Walker's Low seems to be the best bet in my garden at the moment.

I had gorgeous perennial blue flax, then one hard winter took it all. I should try it again. You are right, it is lovely.

It is very pretty! I would love to see a pic of your V. of SP in its full bush form with flowers. Do the flowers last long?

Hi Karen,
This was the first season so it was about 2 1/2 feet tall with several shoots and 5 blooms. The blooms lasted about 4 days!

It looks like the flowers bloom above foliage. That is a plus. I think it will be spectacular when the bush becomes established a year or two from now.
