Oh Linda I bet the white one is really pretty with those green leaves! I'm starting to like a few whites in my gardens.

No Boo won't eat that spurge never knew what it was called until I saw your picture you posted so I thank you for that it doesn't even look appetizing now Purslane looks nice and juicy!

I read your article that was a good article but have about three things I don't care for in the recipe green chilies, raw onions and cilantro Whistling Sorry I know I'm suppose to like raw onions but I just can't bring myself to eat them I eat salsa from the stores but can't taste the raw onions in those it's different when it's fresh the onions seem to stand out to me, I hate that!

I'll try some in my salads when the tomatoes are ripe Big Grin

Hurray! That's okay Lea...most of my friends make their own variations of it. Cilantro is an acquired taste for sure.

Let me know how it turns out and what you might add to it! yum.

Here is another photo of spurge, called spotted spurge.

Lea is right about purslane being more juicy.

Here is a great link so you can learn more about spurge: http://www.msuturfweeds.net/de...

I just read in Good Housekeeping that Dr Oz says:

"Purslane is one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids in the plant kingdom". In Turkey, it's part of a dish call semi-zotu which is purslane salad served with yogurt.

He calls it a weed. Whistling Whistling

Vic, Dr. Oz is right! I used to eat it when I was gardening...the new stems are best. But the ornamental, which I grow, isn't as tasty as the "weed" type with the tiny yellow flowers. My article here has a recipe...let me locate it.

Here it is. http://garden.org/articles/vie...

The cool thing is you can add purslane to any salad.

Is this Purslane? It's succulent, the leaves are quite juicy and it breaks apart easily. I also have Spurge, which looks kinda similar but is a tougher, wirery weed.

Tabby, that looks like th eweed purslane but I'm not 100% sure...best to take a piece to the best nursery in your area. It looks like spurge too. Are there any blooms? Spurge doesn't bloom.

DON"T EAT IT until you know for sure.

That is purslane, the leaves on spurge are different(flat not fat) and when broken exude a white milky sap.
My business is weeding others gardens, and I run across both very often.
..a balanced life is worth pursuit.

Here is the purslane in my garden this morning.

Thumb of 2011-07-17/AYankeeCat/08935d

I pickle purslane by putting it in a jar with apple cider vinegar and a couple garlic cloves and keeping it in the refrigerator for at least two weeks before I eat it.
