I finally bit the bullet and made a decision on my Hosta choices for this year. This is my first year ordering online so am hopeful they will be worth waiting for. No new releases as that's not in the budget but I'm excited none the less! I've ordered: Lakeside Paisley Print, Reptilian, Irish Luck, The Razors Edge, Frisian Pride and Vivacious.

Looks like good choices above. A bit of a note to Debbie - my 'The Razor's Edge' has petioles that are nowhere near as red as that photo. Almost have to wonder if that particular photo was enhanced in some way.

This photo is from 2013 - the plant is much larger now, but it shows the petioles.

Well, I said I wasn't going to order 'First Blush' until I saw how it did for others but...Naylor Creek has it on Facebook so...

Yes, I expect that picture is a little unrealistic. I chose it because it looked so dramatic! Thanks Ann.

It's really different isn't it? Hard to resist. You'll have to let us know how it performs Rose. Hope it's colouring is as dramatic as it appears. I did read that the redness fades in the heat of the summer esp when temps get up into the 90's. I'm not sure how hot your summers are in Illinois.

Our summers get pretty warm and humid. But I have several that lose their pretty colors in the late summer. I always tell people to come see my collection before mid summer!

I'll have to see if anyone in Canada has 'First Blush'.

BTW, 'The Razor's Edge', talked about above, has been a very good grower for me. But it tends to be a bit droopy meaning the red petioles don't get seen a lot.

I'll have to look at catalogues and see if there's anything I can't live without for spring. For the first time in years, I will have fewer hostas than a year ago because last autumn I divided and sold off several I didn't really like. I have only a 60' wide suburban lot and nearly 200 varieties with multiples of some plus some seedlings. Real estate is at a premium and I've slowed down on hosta purchases.

Believe it or not I have cut back! I have plenty to keep me busy and so many look alike. I just try to get the more unusual looking ones now. I'm also replacing ones that I liked but lost along the way.

HostaChoice and HostaFever both have First Blush listed in their online catalogue.

Rose I am in your boat too. It has to look pretty special for me to purchase. When I first got interested in hostas it only needed to have a different name and I needed it. I only purchased plants locally at that time. There was a teriffic hosta nursery about 15 miles from me. I spent a lot of time drooling over there. LOL. It has since turnd into a private garden. At that time I purchased my Striptease. Paid an alarming $40 for it. Striptease and Titanic were two that were "expensive" at that time and I just had to have them. It is still a favorite so I guess long term it was a good investment. Mind you he sold in gallon pots that were fabulously full.

When I had lots of space to work with I tended to ignore the minis. Now I favor the minis as far as acquisitions go.I need to get busy with the backyard shade gardens this summer. Some plants need to be moved and some of the taller things need thinning out. It has kind of gone wild and cottage garden looking back there, I love it. The Tall garden phlox have seeded themselves here and there in the sunny spots.

The larger hostas have kind of overgrown their smaller counterparts, so I need to move some of them.

I had to start online shopping very early. I don't have any sellers within 60 miles so it didn't take long to find some wonderful nurseries out there. I joined a few co-ops early on and got some really nice ones at very reasonable prices. Since q& z closed the new and unusual varieties have slowed way down. I do miss him.

I don't think I'll ever be satisfied with my shade beds so moving plants is always on my list of things to do!

I only ordered three this year. Angel Falls, Kaleidochrome,and Frosted Mini Hearts. Shady spots are now at a premium in my yard so have to watch my buying impulses.
