Sandy,
One year the Kennebeck grew a few plants in the spring. I'm surprised we miss any when we dig, but they must be fairly small. It sure would be nice to get a fall planting in!

I thought I'd pop my head in here as this is the first time I've tried growing potatoes. Picked up these "All Blue" seed potatoes from the Depot on a whim. I never knew they grew this fast. There are 4 days between each picture! And yes, I now realize 4 were way too much for this bag, but live and learn, we'll see how it goes.

Scot,
Those are amazing and they did grow fast! I'm not sure if you could carefully remove all from the bag and replant in the ground. Even one might be too much. Love the bag tho!

I'm a potato-growing newbie and getting ready to plant my seed potatoes in Smart Pots. I'm using some Happy Frog potting soil. I know potatoes like a rich soil and adding compost is recommended. I don't have any garden waste compost at the moment unless I dig up some old leaf mold compost. Would worm compost be okay? I do have worm bins that I could harvest compost from.

I have never grown potatoes but worm compost is fantastic stuff. Great for all growing things.

Potatoes like a slightly acid soil well draining sandy soil. If you've cut them let them dry a few days so they don't rot.

I imagine the worm compost would be excellent!

I did cut the larger potatoes into pieces already. We just don't make a lot of compost anymore since I have worms, I sprinkle dry coffee grounds right on the garden beds and we have a mulching mower. Harvesting worm compost on the garage floor as I type. Thanks for your input!

Lots of great info here regarding potatoes. I've never grown them but couldn't resist snagging a few pounds at Rural King a few days ago.

I really wanted ducklings but settled for a lower maintenance novelty... Big Grin

Just wanted to do a quick update: both containers are now full to the top with soil and the ones in the black pot are flowering!

Rita,
And grow they have! They are big but just getting the wing buds. They follow everyone around, not seeming to have imprinted on just one person.

Scot,
Those look really good! I can't wait to see your harvest! I may have to try that next year. I do have a few huge tubs.

Rita,
When I found out they were getting geese I was so depressed. All I saw was getting out of the truck and being surrounded by geese half my size hissing and running at me, lol! They are very sweet geese. I'll have to see if DD has pictures. I didn't have the camera either time.

I was surprised to see potato plants for sale at Home Depot. Never noticed potato plants for sale before.

I didn't buy any, no room but I was tempted.

Rita,
I've never seen that before either. One plant wouldn't be very many potatoes, but might be just enough to leave a person wanting more next year :o)
