Photo seen online mislabeled as foxglove. Any ideas? Thanks

It is a Foxglove.

It's an old strain of Digitalis purpurea called 'Campanulata' where the apical flower has a bell-shaped form.

From what small amount of info that I've found, it seems to be a peloric mutation that can rarely occur in other strains, too.

Thank you Danita. That's a very bizarre form for a Digitalis flower, I assumed someone called it a foxglove because of the color pattern. Ours have never exhibited this variant.

Yes it is a Foxglove. I was given the name as Digitalis monstrosa. In 1983, we bought an acre of land which had been a nursery in the '20, '30 and '40's. Wherever I disturbed the ground, an amazing number of plants would grow. Hundreds of foxgloves would volunteer. One or two of the monstrosa kinds would appear each year. They would have a shorter stem of blossoms, with the giant open blossom at the top, opening first. Seed saved from them always reverted back to the normal digitalis purpurea - mostly pink, some white, some white with gold flecks inside.

I am a newbie. I hope I have answered this correctly.

@greenthumb99 - - Thank you for starting this Thread. In the beginning of March, I didn't know how to post my Picasa pictures, but I was finally able to find and post 2 photos from our Robson place, of the Digitalis purpurea 'Campanulata', which @Danita correctly identified! Thank You! Now it's your turn to add your beautiful photo to this plant file. Please do! Thumbs up

Boy, that is a really unusual foxglove. Please do add to the database. Welcome HemNorth, hope to see you in the PNW forum now and again.

Can't find the photographer for the image in question but I have been searching on Wikimedia Commons to find a similar image of the terminal flower of the Foxglove that is 'legal' to add to the ATP database and found this one by H Zell:

@greene, You should add that beautiful photo of Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea 'Campanulata') to the database.

In relation to my March 2nd, 2016 response to David's @greenthumb99 question about a Foxglove photo, I had mentioned the one in a hundred chances of Foxglove seedlings turning out to be the Digitalis purpurea 'Campanulata'.

Now at my new garden for ten years, I have finally found another "Monstrosa' !! I am thrilled that another one has graced my garden. It is such an unusual specimen, and I'm glad that a few of the Foxglove seeds have at last thrown a reminder that the old garden thrill of seeing one or two a year, has finally turned up here! It's as though a fairy sprite from the old garden has finally found its way here.
