The director got some negative comments in the one article.

I think so Becky , I did not see any mention of his passing or death anywhere , including a very sparse Wikipedia page on him.

I saw this threads title and thought someone was shipping cocaine across the border in daylily shipments. Last thing I would of suspected was an 87 year old daylily hybridizing drug mule.

Yes, me too. He gets no sympathy from me either if he has done this on his own volition. Can't imagine what possessed him to agree to be a drug mule at his age and all. Well, I am glad that the government does not rule growing daylilies as illegal because I will be in huge trouble. I am so addicted to the daylilies that my family does not know what to do with me. LOL

Kurt - I thought the same thing as you when I read the thread title.

Definitely has the story substance for a made-for-Hollywood movie.

My guess would be that the cartel's hold over him would be the cocaine itself. If he used it and got some for his own use along with dollars for transporting it, then that would probably be enough motivation to keep him delivering it.

floota said:This is really an OLD story that was discussed on the Email robin and FB back in early 2012. A Daylily friend went to visit Leo in prison last year, I believe. Some questioned whether he was aware of what he was doing, as his lawyer argued he'd been taken advantage of. From conversations I had with him back in 2009 I'd say he was as sharp as a tack and no way was he conned into doing anything he didn't want to do. he had plenty of money and was quick to tell about it. I seem to remember his telling me he owned an airplane. So why was he driving??

well it would seem to me that if life is good, and you don't need the money and yet you are doing something rotten, then you may be forced into doing it. Drug rings are not a thing that one ever gets out of once you get sucked into one. These guys are very clever, and once they have you involved, either by choice or by a trick, they never let you go. They threaten your family and they kill you.

beckygardener said:Julie - Thanks for that info. Well, then he was apparently in it for the money and perhaps the thrill of doing it. I guess he thought he could never be caught. Sounds like his ego and greed got the best of him. He's right where he should be (for probably the remainder of his life.) No sympathy for him from me after reading your post.

I can't help but wonder how many people died because of his drug deliveries.

well as someone who has seen the effects of drugs on a family, I have to say that no one died because of his deliveries. He is responsible for making it available. After that, people make their own choice at some point. I realize some people get sucked in as kids and such, but for the most part, users are old enough to know what they are getting into. It's like saying a gas station is responsible for drunk driving death. They only supplied it, the person chose to use it.

"I swear I don't remember where I parked it!!" Rolling on the floor laughing

"I thought you wanted it delivered to Tastie Yogurt!?" (supposed to be Tate St and 4th)....

I traded it to this homeless guy for a new hat, a puppy and half a sandwich..... Blinking

AHS search, looks like many of his dl are registered with Spanish influenced names. Wonder if he had family or other ties to Mexico before he ever got involved in the drugs?
I don't have any of his plants either. I have always had Brookwood Black Kitten on my wish list though. He had some nice things.

I have Brookwood Wow and Brookwood Isabella (below). Did he also used to sell hosta? I might still have some of his catalogs stored away somewhere, but for some reason I thought I started out buying hosta from him, but perhaps I'm confused Sighing!

It is sad that the daylilies have to be shown in a movie that has such negative context. I just hope that people will see past Mr. Sharp's story and see the beauty of the daylilies. Maybe the movie may help get more people curious and interested in growing daylilies. That would be a very positive outcome.

It will be interesting to see how the producer portrays everything. I wonder if it will have any footage on location at whatever is left of his garden? I will be shocked if the flowers they show are actually dl and not asiatics Hilarious! but time will tell I guess....
