When I bought my house, in the front yard there was a mound of dirt and tree stumps that had been there for over 25 years. I had a retaining wall built so I could flatten out the mound and make a bed. This weekend the mound was removed. What we found under all of it was rich black compost. I was fully prepared to amend the soil because I though the mound was going to be mostly sand and clay. Boy was I surprised!!! There was more than enough for the front and some left over for the back yard jungle I'm going to build.

What are you going to plant there?

I think for my first front garden at my new home I'll go tropical - I change the theme every year - Banana Trees, some canna and gingers ... hedychium, globba, costus and curcuma along with caladiums, tropical hibiscus and probably a candle bush for late summer into fall blooming ... senna alata. I'm also going to put in some night bloomers ... moon vine, datura inoxia and trichosanthese kirilowii.

Since I live on a cul-de-sac we don't get any through traffic so I won't feel nervous about putting some of my rarer plants out front for the summer.

Tropical is my favorite!!!! What a showing that will be!

It sounds beautiful! Consider a plumeria too! There are now quite a number of compact or even dwarf plants available that you can keep in a pot.

Hetty I'd love to have some plumeria but they need overwintering in the greenhouse to bloom and space is at a premium .. I was just thinking yesterday that next year I'm going to have to put up the temporary one next year because the overflow just isn't happy in the garage.

That is true. Although they can overwinter bareroot (in your spare shower stall, garage etc. )
