Is anyone planning to do any wintersowing this year? If so, it's time to get serious about collecting containers and stockpiling the potting mix. The mix can be hard to find or get in January.

For me, it's time to start stockpiling milk jugs. We don't drink milk, so I have to rely on family/friends to save jugs for me. I'll be picking up my potting mix in a couple of weeks, just so I don't have to make the trek in the winter.

Yes, me too. We only buy half gallon jugs most of the time, and I prefer gallon size for wintersowing. I'll get my friend to save some for me. She buys all of her water for drinking or cooking in gallon jugs, so they're always nice and clean. I can't wintersow much this year, I'm fresh out of garden space. But I'll definitely do a few jugs of annuals if nothing else.

I know I'm pretty low on ProMix too, and I still have to do coleus cuttings for winter, so I'd better pick up more soon.

Last year was my first year for WS. I had pretty good success so I'll be doing it again this year. I have several things I'm planning on, though I don't have my list made out just yet. Some things will be blue poppies, I have bought seeds several times and have yet to get any to sprout. Shrug! Any ideas?

Well, Stephanie, nobody can accuse you of avoiding a challenge! Blue poppies have a reputation for being very difficult to grow. I've never tried them myself. I have an online garden friend at another site who grows them at her Nova Scotia home, and they are about the prettiest thing I've ever seen. She grows them by wintersowing. I've never met a blue poppy in person, they are very rare in much of the U.S. I do know that they like moist, well drained acid soil and cool weather. They are known to grow well in the PNW and New England.

Don't be discouraged, though, by me. In gardening, especially wintersowing, nothing is impossible. I imagine wintersowing them is your best bet.

Thank you Karen. I'm not discouraged yet. I'm still determined to grow them. Lovey dubby

I am going to wintersow this year. I have not done it in a couple of years, but I always had better success with wintersowing than any other method of seed starting.

Hi, Carolyn--glad you have joined our discussion. What types of things are you planning on wintersowing?

I'm still working on my list.....lots of options, but not as much space Sad

I never seem to have enough space. If it grows, I like it. I have started to collect various hollyhock seeds, verbascum and nicotianas and digitalis. I am sure I will find more than I will have room for - but then, isn't more better? Big Grin

Allison, you have no idea the kind of day I'm having. And I'm in such a bad mood. Glad I can at least laugh at myself.

You echo the sentiments of many of us here, Carolyn Smiling

I WS'd foxglove last year--hoping for some beautiful blossoms next season.

Oh, I'm sorry Allison. Does your house flood? Too bad you can't share some of that with Texas.

We've just had cold, dreary, light rain all day. Miserable, and it feels like late October, early November.

I just got home from work, and I'm off for the next few days. That always cheers me up!

It really did feel like autumn here today--I really am going to need to get serious about potting up the plants I want to bring in, and taking some cuttings.

I've ordered some seeds from various places in preparation for next season......wintersowing time will be here way sooner than I want it to be.

Hope your day was better today, Karen. Allison--are you and your family OK? Hope the flooding hasn't caused too much damage for you.
