in your locaton both would be too cold.. have you tried to overwnter the brugs n the garage before... wthout heat there.. the slab of the floor will have it too cold... much less the air leaking in around the garage door .. on the sides as well as aganst the floor... look at it durng the night.. with a light on in the garage... stand outside with the door closed... if you can see light around it.. that cold will seep in... and the garage floor is likely uninsulated.. and will in no time at all.. be the same temperature as the ground outside... whitch in your area is frozen solid for monts on end during the winter... so the pots sitting on the floor will be below the minimum you need to keep them alive... if you hope to keep them in the garge.. I'd get them up off the floor.. and put in a heater... and then watch them as the temperatures fall.. they can never get below 32* F.. in higher zones...overwintered outside below 32 the tops will die off.. and the ground temperatres being warmer a few inchess below the frozen ground will keep the roots alive... you likely freeze to below 16" there... take cuttings of everything and raise them in the house.. what ever you do

We have a plant light fixture out in the garage that is on most oten than not. We put our fish in a 55 gallon trash can filled with pond water out there all winter long and the water never freezes. We keep our soda on the bench next to the fridge out there (cause its usually filled with Ed's beer)and it never freezes.

The first winter I was going to overwinter some the gardeners I first talked to said put them in an unheated garage and water only when the soil feels dry and not frozen. The top growth all died away and I panicked and just knew they were history. Cut them all down to the soil in the pot and set the pots in a corner to wait the next couple of months till it got warm enough to take them outside to clean out and use for something else. Come around March they started growing from the roots and those things got huge that summer. And BLOOM? They were absolutely gorgeous. Told my husband then, I won't do that any more. I panic too easily. Then we put them in the sun room and he said we are NOT heating it. During the day it can get to 70ยบ in there but at night it dropped considerably, Moved them all down stairs to the basememt with lights. That got hard hauling these big pots down stairs and then dragging them back up so Ed is letting me heat at night.

My problem is I am running out of room What was 8 plants are now 30 some................. there is still about 8 of them outside I haven't brought in yet. I am, though, seriously considering taking a few cuttings from each of them and letting nature take over. They are some of the older ones and I think a little rejuvenation is in ordered. I know it will help with my back immensely.

Told hubby when he got home from work, its unaminous the garden shed will be too cold so we'll just have to park the vehicle in the shed and save the garage for the plants. Yeah that went over like a lead balloon. I was only kidding sheesh......................

Chere... well they did a good job building the garage then... or there's alot of heat leaking in there from the house.. ether way it seems just fine for the plants if the soda isn't freezing..

Now I am trying to talk myself into just taking cuttings, do go saying that now. I'll be back to putting the Envoy in shed for winter Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

I'm afraid down the road Ed is going have me committed for obsessions................

He's already told me he is NOT buying me another house to keep my plants warm in winter., Man has NO sense of humor.

Ceci, we also overwinter in our garage. We don't have the extreme cold you have or if we do, not for very long. Gorden in right about the concrete, tho. The cold concrete will affect the potted plants, so, I use this rigid waterproof foam insulation but several layers of cardboard, with a moisture barrier like plastic if you don't want a soggy mess come Spring, should do the trick for your brugs. Mine are pretty much in the dark all winter. I have had them bloom right after I bring them in in late Oct, early November-- a little extension of the season is welcome!

Before the sun room Ed built me a table and desk kind of thing with shelves and stuff out in the garage. We put down indoor/outdoo carpeting scraps from his brother under it all and by the desk/table. When we first moved here I would start my plants out there in March hence the plant light. Well its not really a plant light it is just florescent lighting but I guess yes it is a plant light. Yes it got cold to set out there in the winter but we had a small heater that we could plug in while out there. Now the heater does the sun room nights and day light heats it during the day..

I've already taken cuttings off all but 3 brugs that are still outside. They have great big buds that have started falling and opening already so that will have to wait till that is done. I'm liking we go back into the 70's next week gives me hope I will get everything ing I want to yet,.

Mine are starting to look skanky. I've cut the peach ones back already because they weren't going to bloom again. Looks like no killing frost yet this week........pretty unheard of for this time of year here in the tundra zone 4a. Big Grin
