The top of a strawberry planter makes a great base for a garden ball or birdbath.

Janet that is wonderful. How do you overwinter the tender succulents in the pot. Does the ball stay out for the winter?

I have a smaller planter for herbs, could use it for a smaller ball. Great job on that BB.

Thanks everyone----a lovely surprise this morning to have my tip featured, and so many nice comments!

Not all my succulents have done well in our winters (many nights in the low 20s) but sempervivums have a much wider temperature survival range. Do check out Lynn's extremely informative forum on these fun and relatively carefree plants! http://garden.org/forums/view/...

Do you bring your tender succulents indoors for winter?

I have a few in smaller pots that I move behind a screen, and I do take cuttings from a couple of favorites (aeonium schwarzkopf, for instance), but for the most part if it doesn't survive on its own, it doesn't grow in my garden. The ones in this pot have been in it for the past 2 winters.

The Graptopetalum seem to be hardy here in my zone 8. It has been down in the teens and survived. It does take a beating and has to make all new rosettes come spring time.
