It's winter and very windy and these seeds are filling the sky but not from any trees in my yard which are Maple. What are they from?

Do you have any fields near you? It looks like some sort of grass maybe Indian grass.

No fields. I may have just solved it, could it be sycamore or sweet gum seeds? We have those few houses down.

It doesn't look like the Sycamore I know, which has pairs of winged seeds.

I think greene's suggestion of Platanus × acerifolia is a good one.

American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) Is what I think it is. There everywhere her in the city of trees. Giants and beautiful. The leaves are huge and a major cleanup issue in the fall. The the seed balls are not well loved.

Keith, you made a post a while back to say that one of the photos you posted was a hybrid London Plane tree:
http://garden.org/thread/view_...
Could the falling seeds be from the same tree?

Platanus x acerifolia could be what we have here. There difficult to distinguish from one another. The seeds are the same as pictured.

Platanus × acerifolia ...

Platanus occidentalis ..

The longer 'tail' on the cap of Platanus × acerifolia looks to match best.

The tree nearby gets spiky brown balls on it.

Absolutely a sycamore!

Keith, the goldfinches here just go ga-ga over the seed balls. It will look like the tree is snowing, there will be so much stuff raining down out of it but if you really look, you can see gobs of goldfinches attacking the balls to glean the seeds out of them.
