Any idea what this is. I was sure it was an aloe but my friend said it is an agave?

Most definitely an Agave.
Young Aloe leaves grow from short beginnings to become longer and up from the center of the plant, while new Agave leaves unfurl from the center growth spike pretty close to full grown length.
AFAIK Aloes do not have distinct terminal spines - they might have pointy, sometimes sharp, leaf ends, but most if not all Agaves have very distinct needle like terminal spines in some shape or form, like this plant clearly does. The leaf edge teeth are also completely Agave-like on this plant.
Exactly which Agave this might be is harder to say.
It is what it is!

You are right!! I never thought about the difference in leaf growth/unfolding between Aloes and Agaves before. Thanks for the botany lesson! Thank You!

The only way I find to learn about new plants is to ask people who grow the plants and those who know more than I do and are willing to share. Thanks again.
