The word Doodaflatchies was used by the friendly folks at the Orchidsource forum to describe those little appendages which wiggle in the slightest breeze to attract a pollinator. Smiling

I had to look up doodaflatchies and learned it was the lamellate palae. Now, aren't you glad you asked? Sheesh, I think a class in high school Latin might be in order or perhaps botany and taxonomy.

they remind me of 'bobble heads'....except it's just the lip. I'm STUNNED , Alice, that doodaflatchies is an actual word..now if I can just find a way to work that into one of my Words With Friends games....

LOL, not sure it is an actual word but that is what it refers too. I think it is sort of like floof which is certainly easier to imagine.

Awesome! And here I thought they just made it up because it sounds good!
But now I like to know what palae means.... Hilarious!

Taking another round on Jim's post, I love the Miltonidium Robin Pittman! You got your own show here!

Thanks, guys. The Miltonidium is the only Miltonia or Miltonia hybrid that I've been able to keep alive, let alone bloom. I'm quite pleased. Now I have my buying shoes on and am heading back to the show. I noticed yesterday when I was there that the prices were pretty high so I'm not expecting to buy much. I will take some pictures to share.

I'm going to also say the Den. Little Atro is spectacular in its small way. What a lot of pretty flowers on a little plant.

Save your money, Jim. Isn't there an Apopka run in the offing next week? I won't be able to make it on Friday, sadly, as I'd love to meet Tara and Jean. But will get to shop a bit - we are joining friends for a golf tournament on Thursday so we're driving up Wednesday afternoon, staying in Orlando Wed. night and walking around gawking and clapping on Thursday (my back aches just talking about it but . . ). I will impose my will (since I'm usually driving while DH talks on the phone) and take a detour to First Orchids at least, on the way to Orlando.

Last time we went in the spring, they had blooming Phaius for $8. I'm SO there.

Daisy, must have fallen asleep right after my last post Rolling on the floor laughing but he only day I can stay up really late is Friday's and Saturdays. Then I kick myself following day because I slept in and didn't get any plant feeding/gardening done.

I have been told to cut seed-pods off, simply to conserve energy and direct it to growth/flowers. If you were going to grow from seed, that's changes everything. I have never even thought of growing from seed.

My daughter has been working on growing orchid from seed. She has all the parts but hasn't quite gotten her environment sterile enough yet. Its fun watching though. I got her a pressure cooker because she was getting contamination from her water bath method.

Mr. Kawamoto gave her 4 huge seedpods in December. Those have been her practice pods. I'm not sure what the plan is when she actually succeeds. There may be no plan... Smiling She has also been shooting all her white orchids up with food coloring.
