I think they're Grackles Melanie.

So right, Ann. Here's a link, telling about the brown females and that they look like a different species. I guess I've never had a female grackle visit my feeders, which seems surprising.

Saw her poking her head up in my downspout last night while it poured buckets of rain (felt sorry for her) and this morning she was there.
I hadn't seen her and her mate for over a month. Thought they flew away.

Great photos, everyone! Hurray! Thumbs up
Claudia, I completely sympathise with the difficulty - we have a tree creeper here that visits regularly, but always on the same oak, which is just a little too far for me to get a good photo. I've jiggled your photo a bit, it's still not brilliant, but a little clearer: Certainly a lot better than anything I have managed!

Love your rockstar! Lovey dubby

I saw a green woodpecker here yesterday - he's been a regular for some years. Unfortunately I got carried away with positioning myself to get a good shot of him, went too close to the window and he flew away... Crying Oh, well, he'll be back and I'll try to be less of an elephant.

Ooh, thanks for the help, guys! Female Grackles do look a lot different than the male. What's up with that? Hilarious!

Claudia, that bird has excellent camouflage! Reminds me of moth patterns and coloration. Thumbs up

It's Friday which means Folklore Friday from Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary! Today's folklore is all about birds!

There are many superstitions associated with birds. Many birds bring good luck, others foretell birth or death. If a bird poops on your head it is a sign of good luck. It is good luck if a blackbird makes a nest on your house. The purple martin is thought to bring good luck to any house where it nests and rears its young. Whatever you do to a robin will happen to you, so be kind! A kingfisher brings good fortune and luck. Sparrows carry the souls of the dead, it's unlucky to kill one. When a swan lays its head and neck back over its body during the daytime it means a storm is coming. Having a wren around will prevent one from drowning. A bird that flies into a house foretells an important message is coming. However, if the bird dies, or is white, this foretells death. Storks deliver babies. Storks were sacred to Venus in Roman mythology. If a stork builds a nest on your roof, you have received a blessing and a promise of never ending love from Venus. Aristotle made killing a stork a crime. The meaning and origin of the expression "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" refers back to medieval falconry where a bird in the hand (the falcon) was a valuable asset and certainly worth more than two in the bush (the prey). It is better to be happy with the things we have rather than risk everything in order to get more. The ‘bird’ we already possess is far more valuable than the ‘two’ we could possibly get. Being that Corkscrew is one of the best places for birding, you should have no trouble finding at least 2 birds in the bush. ‪#‎CorkscrewSwamp‬ ‪#‎FolkloreFriday‬

Well, I didn't think I would get any bird pics today, but I did. And it was the hummingbird! Don't get too excited; I take lousy pictures of them because I don't have feeders. Now, for those who don't know my yard, most everything is native or beneficial to butterflies in some way. But I do have a separate section of the yard that Dad ceded to me that I call my actual "butterfly garden". And that's where the hummingbird was.

Well, let me back up, When I first walked out the side door of the garage, the male Cardinal was once again attacking the side mirror on Dad's truck. I chased it back to the tree. Then, I noticed something moving my pentas around. I knew a butterfly wasn't big enough to do that, and at first I thought maybe the lizards were jumping around. But then I saw that flash of green. Dad and my brother spotted the hummingbird last week in front of the house. But this time, it was over in the side yard and was only interested in my magic red pentas. Why are they magic? Well, if you look through the butterfly threads from last year, you'll see a consistent pattern. Despite the fact that I planted an attractive mix of magenta, pink, and red pentas, the butterflies kept consistently going for the red. It was getting a little ridiculous, so I started saying they must be magical. Apparently, the magic has continued because I also have Salvia 'Black and Blue' and 'Mystic Spires' currently blooming and I didn't see the hummingbird on that. Or the Jatropha, come to think of it.

Now, my pictures suck because hummingbirds are pretty skittish. It's that green blur near the top of the red pentas. Oh hey, you can see 'Mystic Spires' to the right!

I'm kind of proud that I can attract them without using feeders. I'm too lazy to maintain a feeder, anyway. Plus, I like to make things fend for themselves. Also, I don't try to attract birds because of the caterpillar situation. Speaking of birds, though, I have this one that I hear quite often but I heard it this morning and thought I'd mention it. I don't know which one it is, but there's one that sounds like the sound you make when you're playing "Star Wars" and shooting a blaster. You know, "Pew! Pew! Pew!" Like video game noise. Yesterday, we had one imitating the phone ringing in the garage. That was super annoying.

In bird-related news, Mom is making a pair of pillowcases for my aunt who is down here visiting with Grandma. The pattern has Goldfinches on it which are very common at my grandmother's feeders. In fact, I've only ever seen them in West Virginia. I thought you guys might like to see the fabric. Plus, my mom needs lots of positive feedback. She has self esteem issues.

Melanie, super that you saw a Humming bird, I won't get to see any until about the 20th of April, or even later depending on the weather. Tell your Mom I think the Gold Finch fabric is really pretty and will make lovely pillow cases. Thumbs up

Thanks, Phil! I just hope Grandma doesn't try to steal the pillowcases from my aunt! But Grandma's favorite birds are hummingbirds. My aunt is a bird watcher, but I don't know if she has a favorite. She's also very afraid of them for some reason. She likes looking at them, but heaven help us all if one gets near her. Come to think of it, she does collect chicken stuff. But I don't think anyone's favorite bird is a chicken unless you're talking about eating them. Rolling on the floor laughing

Daylight Savings Time means it's super dark here right now! I know it doesn't effect Florida as much since we're closer to the equator. I can't imagine how Northerners adjust. I'll be off to volunteer as soon as I can see outside. It's hard to pick caterpillar food in the dark!

I love seeing the different plants hummingbirds will use. I think we've built up this mindset of "red, tubular flowers" that we often forget how diverse the plants they use really are. Thumbs up
