Nate Bremer's talk was great. Many pictures of tree peonies under evaluation. I highlighted ones that sparked my interest as he went through and I wore out my highlighter. Needless to say, there are some real beauties coming in future years.
I think he is speaking at the APS Convention, if I understood things correctly. So Liz, you won't want to miss that! If you aren't already loving tree peonies, he gives a convincing talk. I am always learning something new each time I attend his talks.
I do love tree peonies already--the colors are amazing! I just don't have any that are large enough to be impressive in my garden yet! I've tried buying older, more established plants but so far our nasty springs over the last few years have defeated me. Not giving up though, just figuring out better ways to outfox Mother Nature.
2-3 year old grafted tree peonies establish and settle in far better than their older counterparts, Solaris Farms is working on hybrizing for beauty AND winter hardiness. Less winter kill means more blooms or ones that die down in the winter and come up from under ground to bloom. He had shown us one that does that in evaluation. Very exciting for us northerners!
That does sound promising, Tracey. Hopefully he'll do the same or similar talk in June! Our problem here is that winter doesn't have a nice, gradual end. I could easily be outside in shorts today, it's at least 70 degrees out there but we're expecting snow by the end of the week. Last year Mother's Day week went from 60-70 degrees to blizzard and negative temps.
I hear you, Liz. Temps all over the place. Plants don't know what to do. I never hope for a quick warm up anymore. It usually means your plants will suffer.
Whatever talk he does in June, you'll love it. Guaranteed.
Tracey, I read the presentation today. I would have loved to have seen the photos. They all sound wonderful. I wonder if he ever posts videos to YouTube?
